The fingerprint reader doesn\u2019t work! Clearly there\u2019s a problem with Google\u2019s manufacturing process, right? \u2026 Right?<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve been following this problem since the Pixel 6 launch, and some <em>Review Geek<\/em> writers have actually dealt with it in-person. That said, faulty fingerprint readers aren\u2019t to blame. Sometimes you have to go back into your settings and redo the process. It sounds silly, but it\u2019s true.<\/p>\n<p>To redo the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/358969\/how-to-make-your-phones-fingerprint-reader-more-accurate\/\">fingerprint setup process<\/a>, open your new phone\u2019s Settings and go to Security. You should see an option titled \u201cPixel Imprint,\u201d which is the most confusing name that Google could give its fingerprint reader, but whatever.<\/p>\n<p>Now that you\u2019re in the poorly-named \u201cPixel Imprint\u201d settings, delete your fingerprint and set it up again. Like, just generally speaking. Not only does it keep your skin healthy and strong, but it improves the performance of in-display fingerprint readers. You know, like the one in your Pixel 6.<\/p>\n<p>Optical in-display fingerprint readers are basically just cameras. They illuminate a portion of your screen to get a good look at your fingerprint, which they can then compare to whatever fingerprints are on file. If there\u2019s a match, your phone unlocks.<\/p>\n<p>But if your fingers are dry or cracked (as they might be this time of year), then your fingerprints might not be very photogenic. Worse, they might not look like the fingerprints you registered with your Pixel 6!<\/p>\n<p>So go grease up for your Pixel 6! So if you got a free screen protector from your carrier or ordered one with your Pixel 6, try ripping that sucker off. Your fingerprint sensor may magically start working.<\/p>\n<p>Just to be clear, screen protectors <em>shouldn\u2019t<\/em> screw up fingerprint sensors. But from what we\u2019ve seen, cheap screen protectors are at the root of some Pixel 6 owners\u2019 problems. A better screen protector, which you can find <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/s?k=pixel+6+screen+protector&amp;crid=G07CBYGF0V3L&amp;tag=reviewgeek-20\">at Amazon<\/a>, should work just fine. (We haven\u2019t had a chance to test Pixel 6 screen protectors, so I\u2019m not going to suggest any specific products. Sorry!)<\/p>\n<p>If removing your screen protector fixes your Pixel 6 fingerprint scanner, go ahead and re-register your fingers. Doing so should increase accuracy and reduce false-negatives.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p>Have all these solutions failed you? I suggest contacting <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/\">Google Support<\/a> or your carrier for some help.
