Huge\u00a0wildfires, fueled by drought conditions, have singed major swathes of California. And\u00a0Hurricane Ida clobbered Louisiana before <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/loveyourenemies.co\/david-million-followers\/story\/heres-why-new-york-philly-and-inland-spots-arent-safe-from-climate-change-fueled-hurricanes-like-ida-11630599975\" class=\"icon none\">bringing historic flooding\u00a0to New York, Philadelphia and beyond<\/a>.  And that\u2019s just in the U.S. Heat and floods have taken their toll on Europe and elsewhere.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       Seasonal storms, even dangerous ones, are expected, but it\u2019s the intensity and frequency of such events, and some geographical surprises, that lead scientists to blame climate change and a hotter planet.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s only going to get warmer. On the current path, between now and 2030, the world will spew up to 28 billion metric tons (31 billion U.S. tons) of Earth-warming greenhouse gases beyond the amount that would keep the planet at or below the most stringent limit set at a Paris,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/resources\/emissions-gap-report-2021\" class=\"icon none\">the United Nations calculated this week.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s against this backdrop that the next chapter in trying to adapt to, and slow down, climate change begins, hosted by a special arm of the United Nations.<\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_this_big_UN_gathering_about\"><\/span>What is this big U.N. gathering about?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>This weekend begins the 26th Conference of Parties (COP26), which runs through Nov. 12. It\u2019s the annual U.N. meeting of the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/unfccc.int\/process-and-meetings\/the-convention\/status-of-ratification\/status-of-ratification-of-the-convention\" class=\"icon none\">197 countries<\/a>\u00a0that have agreed to the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change, \u00a0The meeting is the decision-making body of the countries that signed onto the U.N. Framework decades ago. It is held to assess how well nations are\u00a0dealing with climate change. <\/p>\n<p>The first COP was in Berlin in 1995. COP21 in Paris, six years ago, was a key moment for the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/unfccc.int\/process-and-meetings\/the-paris-agreement\/the-paris-agreement\" class=\"icon none\">Paris Agreement<\/a>. From here, COP meetings are essentially a check-in on progress from Paris. The latest meeting was delayed from 2020 to 2021 because of COVID-19.<\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Whats_the_goal\"><\/span>What\u2019s the goal?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>The overall goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to keep the global temperature from rising more than 1.5 degrees Celsius due to climate change. Through the burning of fossil fuels<br \/>\n        BRN00,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/209704782\/delayed\" class=\"negative\">-0.23%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       that add\u00a0carbon dioxide, methane\u00a0and other gasses to the atmosphere, the Earth\u2019s temperature has already gone up an estimated 2 degrees Fahrenheit, or 1.1 degrees Celsius.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson, as host, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ukcop26.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/COP26-Explained.pdf\" class=\"icon none\">released an explainer<\/a> that detailed four COP26 objectives: <\/p>\n<ol class=\"articleList\">\n<li>\n      Countries bring forward \u201cambitious\u201d 2030 targets for [cutting] carbon emissions that are in alignment with reaching net zero by mid-century.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      Critical discussion of accelerating adaptation measures to protect communities, infrastructure and natural habitats.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      A plan to encourage developed countries to deliver on promises to raise a minimum of $100 billion in climate finance per year. International financial institutions will have to play a critical role in this effort.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      Finalizing the Paris Rulebook (the rules that will guide implementation of the Paris Agreement)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Who_are_the_most_significant_participants\"><\/span>Who are the most significant participants?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">App<\/a>roximately 20,000 people will be attending the formal talks. They include government representatives, scientists and\u00a0policy experts.<\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-membership-tile\"><\/div>\n<p>U.S. President Joe Biden will be there Nov. 1 and 2, during the\u00a0World Leader Summit\u00a0portion of the meeting. <\/p>\n<p>Biden arrives with the latest advances in his domestic policy on climate change still uncertain as he waits for Congress to pass pared down bills addressing cleaner energy and other programs. Although Biden has pledged for the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2021\/04\/22\/fact-sheet-president-biden-sets-2030-greenhouse-gas-pollution-reduction-target-aimed-at-creating-good-paying-union-jobs-and-securing-u-s-leadership-on-clean-energy-technologies\/\" class=\"icon none\">U.S. to cut emissions by half by as soon as 2030<\/a> and says a suite of initiatives can get the nation there, legislative uncertainty leaves the U.S. leader likely to face scrutiny by his global counterparts. Read the president\u2019s latest proposals.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from hundreds of world political leaders, other well-known names are planning\u00a0to attend.\u00a0Queen Elizabeth had planned to attend, but will stay home under a medical directive to rest. Prince Charles and Camilla and\u00a0the Duchess of Cornwall,\u00a0as well as Prince William and Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, will help host in Glasgow.\u00a0Pope Francis\u00a0plans to attend, depending on his health. <\/p>\n<p>Broadcaster, filmmaker and climate activist David Attenborough will be on hand. Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg plans to attend protests on site during COP26.\u00a0A climate rally scheduled for Nov. 6 is expected to draw as many as\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldscotland.com\/news\/19653179.cop26-glasgow-see-police-make-extra-150-300-arrests\/\" class=\"icon none\">150,000 people<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read:<\/strong> Every whale is worth $2 million? A Kremlin spokesman said climate change remains a foreign-policy priority. Russia is the world\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nsenergybusiness.com\/features\/natural-gas-producing-countries\/\" class=\"icon none\">second-largest natural gas producer<\/a> behind the U.S.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read:<\/strong> U.K.\u2019s Johnson seeks \u2018G-20 bounce\u2019 for key climate conference<\/p>\n<p>Chinese President Xi Jinping will talk to global leaders at the climate summit by video link. On Thursday, China formally submitted its climate goals, pledging to reach peak emissions of CO2 emissions before 2030 and achieve \u201ccarbon neutrality,\u201d or using forests and other measures to absorb as much carbon as it emits, by 2060.<\/p>\n<p>The document\u00a0included targets previously announced by Xi\u00a0but set no additional goals.<\/p>\n<p>China is the world\u2019s largest polluter; followed by the U.S. and India.<\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_are_they_saying\"><\/span>What are they saying?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>The world \u201cis still careening towards climate catastrophe,\u201d U.N. Secretary-<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">General<\/a> Antonio Guterres said Friday, even after some countries updated emission pledges. \u201cThere is a serious risk that Glasgow will not deliver.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGlasgow has already summoned more climate ambition than the world has ever seen,\u201d said John Kerry, U.S. climate envoy, speaking at an event at the London School of Economics this week. \u201cAnd in that regard, Glasgow has achieved success.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last Earth Day, Kerry called COP26 the world\u2019s \u201clast, best hope\u201d to solve the climate crisis.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been talking to a lot of people who wonder are we really going to make progress. There are a lot of things that can go wrong even having the right people in the room. I think were are starting to see a lot of good commitments from other countries. The U.S. could hit net-zero, for the sake of argument, tomorrow, and that is still only 11% of global emissions. We care, too, about the other 89%,\u201d said Heather Reams, executive director of U.S.-based, center-right Citizens for Responsible Energy Solutions (CRES). Reams will attend COP26 with a delegation of Republican lawmakers, including Reps. Garret Graves, of Louisiana, and John Curtis, of Utah.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we could get some low-hanging commitments [on emissions cuts] that will head in the right direction, but fall short of what we\u2019ll ultimately need on a timescale many would like. The reality is that a global commitment, because of size, is hard to make,\u201d said Joshua Kendall, who runs the responsible investment practice for U.K.-based Insight Investments. \u201cIt might mean eventually we get bifurcation in international policy, a two-track system in which  those that are doing it like the EU and U.K. are one track, but there is a large party of other contributors, but who say we have other priorities. It unfortunate this might happen, but an interim solution, and may create more traction from investors also.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything is at stake if the leaders do not take climate action,\u201d Ugandan climate activist Vanessa Nakate said. \u201cWe cannot eat coal.
