\n President Trump will allow people brought to the US illegally as minors to renew work permits and protections against deportation for one year.<\/p>\n

The White House announced the decision in a Tuesday call with reporters. The app<\/a>roximately 700,000 people with Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals status can seek renewals.<\/p>\n

Previously, DACA recipients could renew for two years. A senior administration official said a new memo by Homeland Security acting secretary Chad Wolf orders rejection of new applications.<\/p>\n

The Trump administration will meanwhile develop plans to \u201cwind down\u201d DACA, the official said.<\/p>\n

The Supreme Court last month rejected former Attorney General<\/a> Jeff Sessions\u2019 attempt to end the program, established in 2012 by then-President Barack Obama, finding the rationale was \u201carbitrary and capricious.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump administration lawyers argued Obama lacked the legal authority to create the program.<\/p>\n

The policy announced Tuesday falls short of Trump\u2019s recent public remarks teasing a more generous version of DACA.<\/p>\n

In an interview this month with Telemundo anchor Jos\u00e9 D\u00edaz-Balart, Trump said he wanted to give DACA recipients a pathway to citizenship, apparently through an executive order.<\/p>\n

\u201cDACA is going to be just fine. We\u2019re putting it in. It\u2019s going to be just fine. And I am going to be, over the next few weeks, signing an immigration bill that a lot of people don\u2019t know about. You have breaking news<\/a>, but I\u2019m signing a big immigration bill,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n

Trump confirmed during the interview he was talking about an executive order when he used the word bill.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s going to be a very big bill, a very good bill, and merit-based bill and it will include DACA, and I think people are going to be very happy\u2026 one of the aspects of the bill is going to be DACA. We\u2019re going to have a road to citizenship,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n

Trump previously offered to sign into law a version of DACA in exchange for border wall funds and new restrictions on legal immigration.<\/p>\n

Trump said in a second interview this month, with Chris Wallace of Fox News, that \u201cDACA\u2019s going to be taken care of also. But we\u2019re getting rid of it because we\u2019re going to replace it with something much better.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump tweeted in June, however: \u201cI have wanted to take care of DACA recipients better than the Do Nothing Democrats, but for two years they refused to negotiate \u2013 They have abandoned DACA. Based on the [Supreme Court] decision the Dems can\u2019t make DACA citizens. They gained nothing!\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
