“#NBA veteran David West slams Knicks\u2019 Tom Thibodeau hire<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n The Tom Thibodeau \u201cslander\u201d continues \u2014 and it\u2019s not just media<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Former Pacers All-Star forward David West slammed the Knicks\u2019 hire, saying they should have gone with a younger coach who relates better to players.<\/p>\n

West told The Athletic he witnessed how badly Thibodeau mismanaged the players on the Timberwolves during the 2017 preseason. Thibodeau was fired in January 2019.<\/p>\n

West\u2019s remarks come one day after Thibodeau\u2019s buddy, Jeff Van Gundy, said the media has perpetuated \u201cgreat slander\u201d upon the new Knicks coach.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy thing with the Knicks hire is (that) I saw (while) competing against the (Thibodeau) Timberwolves, anybody that\u2019s honest with you, they saw the way that that situation had deteriorated,\u201d West said. \u201cAnd the optics of that situation, in my opinion, were like, \u2018Oh yeah, it\u2019s over over there. Like, they\u2019re done.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cWe went to China with that crew (in 2017) and played two game<\/a>s against them, and it\u2019s like, \u2018Yo.\u2019 The guys weren\u2019t responding, and I\u2019m like, \u2018Man, this is preseason. We ain\u2019t even got to the league yet, and these guys aren\u2019t responding.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

West\u2019s reference to 2017 is ironic given that was the season Thibodeau broke the franchise\u2019s 13-year playoff drought. When he was fired, reports surfaced his connection with young stars such as Karl-Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins was weak.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom that perspective, and then looking at what the Knicks are \u2013 that\u2019s a young team, they\u2019ve got a lot of young (players) who I feel, (are) young, talented guys there,\u201d said West, who played 15 years in the NBA and retired after that 2017-18 season.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just wasn\u2019t a fan of bringing in that style for them. I thought that there are coaches who haven\u2019t gotten these types of opportunities (who were better suited for it).\u201d<\/p>\n

The Knicks interviewed 11 candidates, including young assistants Jason Kidd, Jamahl Mosley, Ime Udoka and Will Hardy.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Knicks job I think is a big job regardless the state of the franchise. It\u2019s still the Knicks,\u201d West said. \u201cI just thought they could have gone in a different direction. And brought in somebody young who could probably relate to the players better. You can ask guys, anybody who witnessed that mess in Minnesota will tell you that\u2026that was, it wasn\u2019t on the players. That\u2019s all I\u2019ll say.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, Suns coach Monty Williams, who worked with Thibodeau on Team USA\u2019s 2016 Olympic Team, disputed that sentiment against the 62-year-old Thibodeau.<\/p>\n

\u201cI laugh at all these people that say he can\u2019t develop younger players and he wears his teams out,\u201d Williams said on SiriusXM Radio. \u201cLook at the success of his programs, teams and the results bear witness.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
