\n This year\u2019s Primetime Emmy nominations offered few surprises.<\/p>\n

The Tuesday morning announcement by a raucous, overly enthusiastic Leslie Jones and presenters Josh Gad, Laverne Cox and Tatiana Maslany included an overabundance of \u201cI\u2019ll have the usual\u201d nods. (Note to Leslie, for next time: \u201cIronside\u201d was in a wheelchair, not \u201cPerry Mason.\u201d)<\/p>\n

The line between broadcast, cable and streaming was erased some time ago, so that\u2019s a nonissue, but for all the talk in 2020 about diversity and change in the TV industry, there was little in the way of shockers in this year\u2019s crop of nominees. The terrific \u201cSchitt\u2019s Creek,\u201d as expected, earned three well-deserved nods (for stars Eugene Levy, Catherine O\u2019Hara and the show itself). But \u201cKilling Eve\u201d co-stars Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer (Best Actress, Drama)? Enough already. That series<\/a> ran out of steam long ago. Ditto for the cartoonish \u201cThe Marvelous Mrs. Maisel\u201d (which received nods for star Rachel Brosnahan and the series) and the knee-jerk nod for \u201cCurb Your Enthusiasm.\u201d<\/p>\n

It was gratifying to see FX\u2019s \u201cWhat We Do in the Shadows\u201d snare a nomination for Best Comedy series; it\u2019s cleverly written with a cohesive \u2014 and very funny \u2014 ensemble cast featuring Matt Berry, Natasia Demetriou, Kayvan Novak, Harvey Guill\u00e9n and Mark Proksch. Kudos to the Television Academy members for that one. And Mark Ruffalo was terrific in HBO\u2019s \u201cI Know This Much Is True,\u201d so I was glad to see his work recognized (Best Actor, Limited Series or TV Movie).<\/p>\n

But those were few and far between. Did we really need Best Drama nominations for long-in-the-tooth \u201cBetter Call Saul\u201d (which waited two years to drop new episodes), \u201cThe Crown,\u201d \u201cThe Handmaid\u2019s Tale\u201d and \u201cStranger Things\u201d? And what about \u201cThe Morning Show,\u201d which didn\u2019t exactly set the world on fire when it premiered last fall on App<\/a>le TV ? That series earned a nomination for star Jennifer Aniston (Best Actress, Drama). Laziness on the part of the TV Academy voters? Perhaps. Or maybe they\u2019re distracted by everything else going on in the world right now.<\/p>\n

However, it was nice to see Disney \u2019s \u00a0big launch series, \u201cThe Mandalorian,\u201d snare a Best Drama nomination, even if we\u2019re still not sure if that\u2019s really<\/em> Pedro Pascal in the titular role. (His face was never seen.) Unlike \u201cThe Morning Show,\u201d \u201cThe Mandalorian\u201d was a talker upon its premiere (Baby Yoda sound familiar?) and gave the newly launched streaming service a huge boost as a franchise series. And the academy voters were spot on in giving Zendaya her first Emmy nomination for the HBO teen drama \u201cEuphoria.\u201d Good on ya.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s really not much to say about the Best Variety Series or Best Competition Series \u2014 the fields for both are slim, so those nominees aren\u2019t surprising. Although it was nice to see \u201cFull Frontal With Samantha Bee\u201d snare a nod.<\/p>\n

When all is said and done, the nominees do not bode particularly well for the Sept. 20 telecast on ABC, hosted (in some form or another) by Jimmy Kimmel. Last year\u2019s Emmy broadcast dipped to a historically low 6.9 million viewers, continuing a years-long trend.<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t think this year\u2019s crop of hopefuls will staunch the ratings hemorrhage.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
