\nIn the aftermath of the shocking accident on the set of the film Rust<\/em>, in which a prop gun being used by\u00a0Alec Baldwin<\/strong> fired a very real bullet that struck and killed cinematographer\u00a0Halyna Hutchins<\/strong>, there has been a lot of finger pointing.<\/p>\n

One name which has come up over and over is first assistant director Dave Halls<\/strong>, who \u2014 according to multiple witnesses in the ongoing investigation \u2014 handed Alec the pistol and announced it was a \u201ccold gun\u201d (meaning no live ammunition).<\/p>\n

While Baldwin, co-star\u00a0Jensen Ackles<\/strong>, Hutchins\u2019 husband, and everyone else in Hollywood has spoken out, until now, Halls has remained quiet about the situation. But on Monday he broke his silence, releasing a statement which read, per the\u00a0New York Post<\/em>:<\/p>\n

\u201cHalyna Hutchins was not just one of the most talented people I\u2019ve worked with, but also a friend.\u00a0I\u2019m shocked and saddened by her death. It\u2019s my hope that this tragedy prompts the industry to reevaluate its values and practices to ensure no one is harmed through the creative process again.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Nothing wrong with that statement except\u2026 well, the source, frankly.<\/p>\n

More than anyone else involved with the project, Halls has been the subject of discussion about ignoring safety regulations.<\/p>\n

Sources have come forward from both this film AND a previous one, 2019\u2019s Freedom\u2019s Path<\/em>, to reveal ways in which he \u201ccut whatever corners were necessary\u201d to make the day \u2014 including rules in place to ensure the safety of the cast and crew. One source who worked with him on two movies<\/a> said:<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was very flippant about my insistence on having a safety meeting about the weapons, on both of the sets. He would rush through it and say, alright guys, be safe, let\u2019s get to work.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Halls himself told police he didn\u2019t actually check \u201call\u201d the cylinders of the revolver before announcing to the set it was safe. So when he talks abut an industry needing \u201cto reevaluate its values and practices\u201d it does come across a bit hollow.<\/p>\n

He ended by saying he was \u201coverwhelmed by the love and support\u201d and added:<\/p>\n

\u201cMy thoughts are with all who knew and loved Halyna.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Where do YOU think the blame lies for this horrible accident? The rules? Or those who keep breaking them? Either way, he\u2019s right about one thing \u2014 something in the industry needs to change.<\/p>\n
