\n Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Sunday that he will be taking funding from the NYPD to instead support local youth groups.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will be moving funding from the NYPD to youth initiatives and social<\/a> services,\u201d Hizzoner vowed, calling it part of \u201cdeeper reforms\u201d to tackle the \u201cprofound disparities\u201d in the city.<\/p>\n

It was not clear how much funding was being switched or which groups would receive the extra help. Hizzoner said the \u201cdetails will be worked out in the budget process in the weeks ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n

De Blasio vowed that it would be done \u201cin a way that we are certain continues to ensure that this city will be safe.\u201d<\/p>\n

The mayor also announced that street vendor enforcement will \u201cno longer be the responsibility of the NYPD,\u201d and will instead be handled by a civilian agency. He did not clarify which agency.<\/p>\n

He called it \u201can area that New Yorkers feel passionately about\u201d because it involves people trying to \u201cexperience some version of that American dream that often feels elusive lately.\u201d<\/p>\n

He called street vending an \u201copportunity to move forward\u201d for many immigrants.<\/p>\n

De Blasio also repeated calls for reform to state privacy laws shielding officers\u2019 disciplinary records.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
