Moreover, the issue of teacher compensation has gained currency since the Great Recession, as states and school districts have frequently faced tough budget decisions to cut benefits or halt pay raises. And teacher compensation has important implications for hiring and retaining high-quality teachers and, consequently, for student academic performance.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       An extensive literature that compares the wages of public school teachers to that of other college-educated individuals <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>ly finds that teachers earn significantly lower wages than their private sector counterparts.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But public sector workers tend to receive a larger portion of their compensation in the form of benefits than private sector workers. As such, any gap in wages for teachers may be partially \u2014 or completely \u2014 offset by more generous benefits.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Previous studies measuring total compensation tended to use broad averages for the health and retirement costs, which wash over meaningful differences among workers by region, employer size, and occupation. And they fail to fully explain the role of all other benefits, including <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Social<\/a> Security, supplemental pay, and paid leave, which turn out to be important. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>To move the ball forward, my colleagues <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/crr.bc.edu\/about-us\/people\/bc-crr_bios\/siyan-liu\/\" class=\"icon none\">Siyan Liu<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/crr.bc.edu\/about-us\/people\/bc-crr_bios\/researchers\/jean-pierre-aubry\/\" class=\"icon none\">JP Aubry<\/a> have just completed <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/crr.bc.edu\/briefs\/what-do-we-know-about-public-teacher-compensation\/\" class=\"icon none\">a comprehensive assessment of teacher compensation<\/a>. They start with a standard regression relating wages to a bunch of demographic variables, educational attainment, and whether the individual is a public school teacher. A complete picture of compensation requires adding the value of health insurance, retirement benefits, retiree health insurance, and other benefits to the wages of each teacher and private sector worker. In all cases, each public and private worker is matched \u2014 based on location and firm size \u2014 to the relevant retirement plan or benefit measure. This matching exercise finds that teachers get much more in retirement and healthcare, but less in other benefits like bonuses and paid leave. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Liu and Aubry then reran their initial wage regression with \u201cwages plus benefits\u201d as the dependent variable. But, given the benefit cuts in state and local retirement plans, average compensation for teachers is likely to worsen as newer teachers hired after the Great Recession form the majority of the teaching workforce.
