But these days, he shows little interest in turning the other cheek. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cJesus never commanded us to not defend ourselves,\u201d he told The Post. \u201cAs Christians, we are commanded to seek out justice, truth and restoration. The law gives us opportunities to do all of those things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After being fired from Broadway\u2019s  \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2021\/10\/21\/broadway-star-claims-he-was-fired-for-christian-beliefs\/?_ga=2.77328592.497983952.1635805686-amp-XukvI4TXBgxLvklXmM4Qw9oSJ27wYyuCfLTN-ytV25hMWV_CiV2BFLCofmeguLY-\">Come From Away<\/a>,\u201d the Tony-nominated actor is suing the show\u2019s producer, Kiss The Cod Broadway, and its management company, Alchemy Production Group \u2014 alleging he was let go due to his religious beliefs.<\/p>\n<p>Last November, Kimball unwittingly stirred up a storm of controversy when he tweeted his unh<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>iness over a COVID mandate in his home state of Washington that limited religious services and forbade worshipers from singing in church.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRespectfully, I will never allow a Governor, or anyone, to stop me from SINGING, let alone sing in worship to my God. Folks, absolute POWER corrupts ABSOLUTELY. This is not about safety. It\u2019s about POWER. I will respectfully disobey these unlawful orders,\u201d he tweeted in response to Gov. Jay Inslee\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n<p>That led to Kimball being \u201cunlawfully terminated \u2026 because [his] religious beliefs simply made them uncomfortable,\u201d according to the lawsuit filed by attorney Lawrence Spasojevich of the firm Aidala, Bertuna &amp; Kamins. Now the actor is seeking remuneration of an undisclosed sum for what he maintains is discrimination in the workplace. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-block-embed-embed-handler wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"COME FROM AWAY: Come Back Together\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/aTgw1Pg9Ea4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Spasojevich told The Post that it is about more than money. \u201cOne of the most important things is a finding that decisions made by the defendants were discriminatory, based on Chad\u2019s religion,\u201d the lawyer said. \u201cIt will bring vindication and hopefully some peace to Chad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Kimball, who was a 2010 Tony nominee for his role in \u201cMemphis,\u201d told The Post that his religion can be a liability on Broadway: \u201cChristians can sometimes be looked down upon in the theater world. Historically, the theater community is made up largely of marginalized members of society. Unfortunately, there\u2019s been friction between them and the church.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The off-stage drama began on Nov. 15 of last year. Like all Broadway productions, \u201cCome From Away\u201d was on hiatus at the time, temporarily shut down due to the spread of COVID-19. My parents practice what they preach and we are all people of integrity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But as COVID surged in the state, large gatherings were called into question, leading Gov. Inslee to issue the mandate that houses of worship be limited to 25 percent capacity and that \u201ccongregational members \u2026 won\u2019t be allowed to sing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ban hit Kimball hard, especially at a time when the world seemed to be turning upside down. \u201cI felt like it was encroaching on my spirit and encroaching on our collective conscious,\u201d he said. \u201cAs a Christian and a prayerful person, it felt like there was someone outside of myself trying to take a part of myself from me. It is not easy for me to not sing. I am commanded to sing. I want to sing. It is my faith.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So Kimball did what a lot of people do when politics get under their skin: He <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/chadkimball1\/status\/1328074169032970241?lang=en\">took to Twitter<\/a>. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"embed-wrapper twitter\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Respectfully, I will never allow a Governor, or anyone, to stop me from SINGING, let alone sing in worship to my God. There is no point in getting people riled up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An hour after posting, his friends began reaching out and asking if Kimball had seen what was happening online. <\/p>\n<p>Suddenly, his statement which he meant for a few was being seen by many. People \u201cwho have more influence than I do, such as [actors] Billy Eichner and Colin Donnell\u201d retweeted the post, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a>verse was having its way with him. Some wished him death, others hoped he would contract COVID. Then there were those who suggested he simply exercise his vocal cords in private. \u201cThis is about keeping people safe. If you feel that strongly about it\u2026 pray and sing at home,\u201d posted one person. But it\u2019s where you get more negative comments than likes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was obvious that a large swath of people thought I was anti-mask, anti-social distancing and anti-safety,\u201d said Kimball. He received Twitter comments like: \u201cChad. You are wrong on this. Masking for your fellow human is an easy thing to do. Don\u2019t be so selfish.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Kimball had no problem with mask-wearing or with limiting the number of congregants. \u201cI just wanted to be able to sing in church while wearing a mask and being socially distanced,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<p>Later that day, he tweeted: \u201cTo be clear: Nobody is going maskless,\u201d he wrote. \u201cThe overreach \u2014 in my opinion! \u2014 is not being able to sing even WITH a mask ON. Everyone will continue wearing masks. With respect and with hope and with care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That didn\u2019t help.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI was confused as to why people would be so egregiously vitriolic in their responses,\u201d Kimball said. \u201cSome people told me to take the [first] tweet down or apologize. But I wasn\u2019t going to do that. I did nothing wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still, the worst was yet to come. Days later, as things remained heated, he reached out to \u201cCome From Away\u201d producer Susan Frost via e-mail. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told Sue that I tweeted something that caused controversy,\u201d Kimball said. She was already aware.<\/p>\n<p>Having been part of the cast since the play\u2019s California inception in 2015 \u2014 it toured four cities before landing on Broadway in March 2017 \u2014 the actor, who played stranded airline passenger Kevin T., had assumed he would have producers\u2019 support.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought it was an opportunity for [Frost] to say that my place in the show is important and that they would defend me,\u201d said Kimball. Twelve days later, according to the complaint, Kimball was contacted by Frost with \u201cconcerns\u201d that \u201cevents at the Capitol, Josh Hawley and the Conservative Christian movement were tied together and implied a connection between Mr. Kimball, by virtue of his faith, to the ideas and actions of the January 6, 2021 events at the US Capitol.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The complaint maintains that Frost encouraged a \u201creconciliation.\u201d But Kimball told The Post, \u201cI never found out exactly who I was supposed to reconcile with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Jan. 22, Kimball and Frost spoke again. That was when, according to the court document, she told him he was terminated, adding that there was \u201ctoo much work to do\u201d and the production needed to focus on bringing the show back together and ensure people\u2019s safety.<\/p>\n<p>In a follow-up conversation with her, Kimball expressed being in a state of \u201cdespair\u201d and said that his dismissal had to do partly with the \u201creligiosity\u201d of his November tweet. The complaint alleges that Frost told him, \u201cNo one saw this coming.\u201d <\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>According to the court document, Kimball also had a conversation with the show\u2019s director, Christopher Ashley. \u201cChris is a friend who has a brilliant theatrical mind,\u201d said Kimball. \u201cI asked him if the termination was because of the feelings within the cast or because of my religious beliefs. He said it was everything.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Ashley had no comment for this story.<\/p>\n<p>Currently in Los Angeles, far from the Great White Way, Kimball has auditioned for a couple of West Coast productions that failed to pan out. \u201cI don\u2019t think the theater world is currently fertile ground [for me],\u201d he admitted, acknowledging that East Coast and West Coast are pretty much tied together. \u201cI hope it might change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCome From Away\u201d reopened on Broadway without Kimball on Sept. 21, but he harbors no ill will toward the cast and crew.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI pray for those involved with the show to have nothing but the best,\u201d Kimball said. \u201cThe show has an important message of accepting all who come to your door regardless of what they believe. The problem is that it did not apply to me when it should have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He maintains his Twitter account and recently <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/chadkimball1\/status\/1452753437691572226\/photo\/1\">posted that a \u201cviolation of my protected civil rights\u201d<\/a> is one reason for his lawsuit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis situation, this thing that happened to me, it has been life-changing,\u201d Kimball said. \u201cI lost my purpose, I lost my job, I lost my way. It\u2019s been hard and it\u2019s been depressing but it hasn\u2019t destroyed me.
