Now, the Metaverse landscape has a multi-billion dollar corporate behemoth vying for the helm, which has made its future all the more uncertain.<\/p>\n<p>Whether we like it or not, major corporations will likely play a major role in how the Metaverse develops and evolves. But will it be plagued by the same problems faced by today\u2019s social media giants, or will decentralized platforms and services take center stage?<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Related: <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>New industry, new rules: Building the Metaverse without bias<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Building_a_digital_walled_garden\"><\/span>Building a digital walled garden<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>At last week\u2019s Facebook Connect conference, Meta founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced plans to spend $10 billion this year alone on the development of the Metaverse \u2014 an ecosystem of interconnected digital experiences, services and platforms that seamlessly blend with the real world.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Announcing <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Meta?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@Meta<\/a> \u2014 the Facebook company\u2019s new name. Meta is helping to build the metaverse, a place where we\u2019ll play and connect in 3D. Welcome to the next chapter of social connection. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ywSJPLsCoD\">pic.twitter.com\/ywSJPLsCoD<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Meta (@Meta) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Meta\/status\/1453795115701440524?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 28, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>But as Facebook has shown time and time again \u2014 such as when it <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.roadtovr.com\/oculus-guarantee-promise-facebook-log-in\/\" data-amp=\"https:\/\/www-roadtovr-com.cdn.ampproject.org\/c\/s\/www.roadtovr.com\/oculus-guarantee-promise-facebook-log-in\/amp\/\">backpedaled<\/a> on its pledge to not require a Facebook account to use its Oculus products \u2014 it will almost certainly look to enforce strict controls on how the Metaverse is used and accessed. After all, ecosystem lock-ins are a popular, tried-and-tested way to force continued engagement while isolating the competition.<\/p>\n<p>Given that Zuckerberg himself billed the Metaverse as the \u201cnext generation of the internet\u201d that will be used by hundreds of millions of users, it seems unlikely that a corporate goliath with shareholders to please won\u2019t do everything in its power behind the scenes to position Meta at the center of the Metaverse.<\/p>\n<p>As a vast, upcoming landscape that will without a doubt introduce new ways to create, socialize and work online, the Metaverse stands to become a ubiquitous medium that most internet-savvy individuals will interact with to some degree.<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, given the recent <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/the-facebook-files-11631713039\" data-amp=\"https:\/\/www-wsj-com.cdn.ampproject.org\/c\/s\/www.wsj.com\/amp\/articles\/the-facebook-files-11631713039\">release<\/a> of the damning \u201cFacebook Files\u201d by The Wall Street Journal, it has been revealed that the social media platform has been suffering from a whole plethora of issues and operating with some seriously dubious business practices \u2014 ranging from a huge lawsuit to lax content moderation to the preferential treatment of certain users. All of which is in stark contrast to Zuckerberg\u2019s supposed egalitarian vision for the Metaverse.<\/p>\n<p><em>If the Metaverse is made in Facebook\u2019s image, count me out.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>These documents also show that Facebook is rapidly losing favor among millennials \u2014 the generation most likely to interact with Metaverse technologies. <\/p>\n<p>Meta has already been widely slammed for its plans and was recently labeled a \u201ccancer to democracy\u201d by American politician Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in a recent Twitter lashing. This sentiment <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ears to be the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> consensus on Crypto Twitter, which didn\u2019t react favorably to the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Meta as in \u201cwe are a cancer to democracy metastasizing into a global surveillance and propaganda machine for boosting authoritarian regimes and destroying civil society\u2026 for profit!\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/jzOcCFaWkJ\">https:\/\/t.co\/jzOcCFaWkJ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AOC\/status\/1453812534599950340?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 28, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a> is rigged and it\u2019s not in your favor. Meta wants to own your digital identity, and given its way, it will have access to more of your data than ever before. <em>No, thank you!<\/em><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_blockchain_catapult\"><\/span>The blockchain catapult<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Blockchain is widely expected to become one of the key technologies enabling the development of a truly pervasive virtual space that can be navigated just as securely as the Web 2.0 internet.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to blockchain-powered digital identity solutions that will power truly persistent digital avatars, along with digital assets that provide region-agnostic access to services and products, the Metaverse looks set to inherit the values that the blockchain industry was founded on \u2014 namely, permissionless access, censorship resistance, security and decentralization.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Related: <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>Regulators are coming for crypto: Is digital identity the answer?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, tech incumbents will eventually look to muscle in on the blockchain infrastructure side of things in an attempt to direct the development of the Metaverse and shape it in their own image. After all, given that the Metaverse industry is<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.roundhillinvestments.com\/research\/metaverse\/intro-to-the-metaverse\"> slated<\/a> to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 13.1% over the next few years, while the blockchain <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> sector is <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reportlinker.com\/p04793539\/Global-Blockchain-Technology-Market.html?utm_source=GNW\">projected<\/a> to soar by 32.4% until at least 2025, there is a strong financial incentive to establish an early foothold.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.cointelegraph.com\/uploads\/2021-11\/e7d5a139-ee75-47d9-b17d-e0f91ec0fc79.png\"><\/figure>\n<p>Twitter is set to be one of the first to get in on the action with Bluesky, a decentralized social media protocol that will eventually be used to host a variety of social networks \u2014 Twitter included. However, given that Twitter too has been subject to more than its fair share of controversies, including dubious account suspensions, high-profile account hijackings, and numerous reports of government censorship, it isn\u2019t so clear-cut as to whether this will support the aforementioned core tenets.<\/p>\n<p>Not to mention the fact that Twitter (and many other social media platforms) are banned in several countries. And as we have seen before with Facebook\u2019s Novi wallet product, corporate crypto projects tend to attract excessive regulatory scrutiny, often severely restricting their scope and eventually resulting in a watered-down product, wherein the balance between profit and progress is often skewed to the former.<\/p>\n<p>A range of crypto-native social media platforms and metaverse projects are currently in development and arguably have a major head-start and technical advantage over corporate-backed offerings in that they can remain truly permissionless and democratic. This includes the likes of Decentraland and Bloktopia \u2014 which already provide an early view into what the Metaverse could be through their complex, user-controlled economies, virtual real estate and digital VR-based digital experiences.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Been a few days since we turned off the lights, shut down the human cannonball and bundled Juan into the bus. Based on Velas (a Solana fork), Bitorbit is designed to tackle the very problems that make corporate-owned social media such a bleak experience for users and creators \u2014 using blockchain to restore privacy and help users better monetize their content and transact securely online.<\/p>\n<p>Given its potential to radically change the way we interact with one another and go about our daily lives, the Metaverse is shaping up to be a pivotal technology for all of us.<\/p>\n<p>But with corporate giants set to clash with the motivated and resourceful blockchain community over the development and nature of the Metaverse, it is still unclear whether it will be yet another tool designed to exploit the masses or the promised land we all want.<\/p>\n<p><template data-name=\"subscription_form\" data-type=\"crypto_biz\"><\/template><\/p>\n<p class=\"post-content__disclaimer\"><em>This article does not contain investment advice or recommendations.
