It\u2019s crucial for the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Professor Reid is concerned about the vast amount of data that could be collected from the metaverse and who controls it.<\/p>\n<p>He also fears that avatars could be hacked and you could end up interacting with cybercriminals rather than people you know and trust.<\/p>\n<p>Reid explained: \u201cThe\u00a0metaverse\u2019s\u00a0ultimate aim is not just virtual reality or augmented reality,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0mixed reality (MR). It\u2019s blending the digital and the real world together. Ultimately this blend may be so good, and so pervasive, that the virtual and the real become indistinguishable.\u00a0\u201c<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the market for that is gigantic. Whoever controls it, will basically have control over your\u00a0<em>entire<\/em>\u00a0reality.\u00a0\u201c<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany current MR prototype systems have face, eye, body and hand tracking tech. Most have sophisticated cameras. Some even incorporate Electroencephalogram (EEG) <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> in order to pick up brainwave patterns. In other words everything you say, manipulate, look at, or even\u00a0<em>think about<\/em>\u00a0can be monitored in MR.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe data this will generate will be vast\u2026..and extremely valuable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd that\u2019s why we need a system in place to police it. It\u2019s about making the time we already spend better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Facebook has even rebranded\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/tech\/16564262\/facebook-meta-name-change\/\">its parent company operation as Meta<\/a>, as part of its commitment to the metaverse.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to journalists including The Sun, Meta\u2019s VR boss Andrew Bosworth said: \u201cThe metaverse is a set of virtual 3D spaces where you can share immersive experiences with each other when you can\u2019t be together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat comes after the internet? Instead of looking at a screen, you get to be in the experiences.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t have to experience it in VR. Most people initially will experience it on screens they already have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you think it all sounds very broad, you\u2019re right. It is.<\/p>\n<p>The rough idea is that it\u2019s an internet, but immersive \u2013 so you live inside it, and interact with it.<\/p>\n<p>The metaverse will have loads of experiences, including games, social networks, videos, shopping, health and fitness and more.<\/p>\n<p>It already exists in some forms now \u2013 with Facebook\u2019s\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/tech\/16101827\/best-oculus-quest-2-games-apps-free-download\/\">Oculus VR<\/a>, and games like\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/topic\/fortnite\/\">Fortnite<\/a>,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/topic\/roblox\/\">Roblox<\/a>\u00a0and Minecraft.<\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s not huge in terms of scale.<\/p>\n<p>Zuckerberg thinks that the true metaverse will be ready within the decade.<\/p>\n<p>Aspects already exist now, and we\u2019ll see significant leaps in the next few years.<\/p>\n<p>Tech giant\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/topic\/meta\/\">Meta<\/a>\u00a0(formerly Facebook) has poured billions of dollars into building the \u201cmetaverse\u201d already \u2013 and recently vowed to hire another 10,000 staff to work on the project.<\/p>\n<p><em>This story originally appeared in <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.the-sun.com\/\">The Sun<\/a> and has been reproduced here with permission. <\/em>\n                        <\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
