{"id":363675,"date":"2021-11-07T15:59:58","date_gmt":"2021-11-07T12:59:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/this-marine-vet-gets-boots-on-the-ground-for-disaster-hit-communities\/"},"modified":"2021-11-07T15:59:58","modified_gmt":"2021-11-07T12:59:58","slug":"this-marine-vet-gets-boots-on-the-ground-for-disaster-hit-communities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/this-marine-vet-gets-boots-on-the-ground-for-disaster-hit-communities\/","title":{"rendered":"#This Marine vet gets boots on the ground for disaster-hit communities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#This Marine vet gets boots on the ground for disaster-hit communities<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>When Marine Corps veteran Jon Connors hears about natural disasters and refugees, he\u2019s im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>tely ready to get boots on the ground to help.<\/p>\n<p>Connors is deputy director of operations at <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/teamrubiconusa.org\/\">Team Rubicon<\/a>, a global organization with nearly 150,000 volunteers founded by Jake Wood and William McNulty in 2010. These Marine Corps veterans were spurred into action after the devastating Haiti earthquake that year, and their grassroots organization has since gone on to serve communities impacted by disaster who are often underserved by traditional aid organizations.<\/p>\n<p>Today, Team Rubicon is comprised of veterans, first responders and civilians. Jersey City, NJ, resident Connors leads, guides and supports the full-time staff and the volunteers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy daily work includes everything from supporting our volunteer leaders to <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> staff meetings at the national level,\u201d he said. \u201cI may be filing performance reviews one day and in the field behind a chainsaw the next.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Connors also navigates daily challenges like Mother Nature\u2019s unpredictability.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou might have a dedicated, badass group of volunteer leaders who are operationally capable, but some of those people might not be available [in a crisis] because they, too, have jobs, families and lives, or maybe they were victims of the disaster,\u201d he said. \u201cYou can train people, you can get them ready to deploy, but when the crisis h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ens, you have to play with the team that you have at that moment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Operating quickly is nothing new to the veteran, who served as captain and joint public affairs officer for Marine Corps Air Station Yuma in Arizona. After graduating from Villanova University in 1992, he spent time in the Middle East and North Africa from 1992 to 1996. When you\u2019re in the Marine Corps, your whole identity is being a Marine. Once you leave it and come back to the real world, you lose that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For years, Connors \u201cwas successfully bouncing around the Internet bubble of New York City,\u201d but longed for \u201cthat desire to serve and do something other than just try to make money.\u201d After volunteering for a variety of organizations, in 2013 he discovered Team Rubicon and immediately identified with their purpose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m eternally happy now,\u201d he said. \u201cMy whole life is around helping people, whether it\u2019s victims of disasters or team members looking to do more. It\u2019s a great opportunity to fill that void when you take off the uniform.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The disaster relief organization\u2019s principles are synergistic with his background, which is: \u201cMission first. Just like the military, you have to accomplish the mission. Step into the arena. Don\u2019t be afraid to be bold, take chances and lead. The next one is \u2018change your socks.\u2019 This is also something from the Marine Corps. It\u2019s literal and metaphorical. If your socks are wet and muddy, your feet are going to get rotten. When we tell you to change your socks, go home, take off your work boots. Do wellness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Connors taps into the empathy that he acquired during his five years serving our country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMission always came first. If you\u2019re not taking care of your people, you\u2019re not going to be able to accomplish your mission,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>When a Marine who worked for him was informed a relative passed away, Connors made sure he went home to be with his family before he got deployed overseas. \u201cIt\u2019s a day-to-day basis \u2014 being able to give your troops not only the physical support, but also the emotional and mental support so they could best accomplish their mission.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"430\" height=\"599\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/11\/Africa.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=430\" alt=\"Jon Connors, active duty in Africa (center).\" class=\"wp-image-20060521\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/11\/Africa.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all 430w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/11\/Africa.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=215 215w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 430px) 100vw, 430px\"\/><figcaption>Jon Connors, active duty in Africa (center).<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Courtesy of Jon Connors<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>During disaster relief situations, he mentors Team Rubicon volunteers, known as \u201cGreyshirts,\u201d reminding them that the house they\u2019re about to enter was destroyed overnight and the owner probably lost everything.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s be there for the person \u2014 if the person needs to stop and talk about what they went through, let\u2019s do that,\u201d Connors said. \u201cWe always have that lens of care while we\u2019re doing the manual labor of helping them get back on their feet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Connors relies on discipline and time management skills acquired in the military to \u201cpolice myself to ensure I\u2019m going to have a full, productive work day. I think that prior service helped me prepare for setting really firm schedules to work from home successfully.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He prides the organization on \u201chaving boots on the ground\u201d within 24 to 48 hours of a crisis, like helping local flood victims in the aftermath of Hurricane Ida. He also makes sure the Greyshirts always have a safe, clean place to stay overnight, like a church basement or cot in a gymnasium with access to donated food.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, Connors focused on the Afghan resettlement operation. At Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, near Trenton, NJ, Team Rubicon is helping 10,000 Afghans who are temporarily living on its military base.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlane load after plane load coming from Afghanistan \u2014 they had nothing other than the clothes on their back,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s such a meaningful mission, and for many at Team Rubicon, it\u2019s a different way to help humanity. So many of our members served in Afghanistan and were so affected by Afghan families who welcomed them, or gave them tea. This is finally a way to give them some sort of closure, and help those communities resettle and get back on their feet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s all in a meaningful day\u2019s work for Connors. \u201cIf I can positively impact 10 of our volunteers, that\u2019s a great day.
