Luckily, Google Docs provides a feature to quickly search for text on desktop and mobile.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Search_for_Words_in_Google_Docs_on_Desktop\"><\/span>Search for Words in Google Docs on Desktop<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Searching for text, as the name implies, allows you to quickly locate text within a document. Google Docs takes it one step further and even allows you to replace that text with other text using the Find and Replace feature.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <strong><em>How to Search for Text in Word<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>First, launch any browser on your desktop and then open the Google Docs document that has text in it. To simply search for text, press Ctrl+F (Command+F on Mac), and the Search box will <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ear in the top-right corner of the window.<\/p>\n<p>Type the word or phrase you want to search for in the Search box. Note that the search isn\u2019t case-sensitive. The number of times that word or phrase appears in the document is displayed to the right.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-760730\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Search-for-a-word-in-the-Search-box..png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Search for a word in the Search box.\" width=\"362\" height=\"100\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If there are multiple instances of that word in the document, Google Docs will highlight which instance of that word you are currently on in the order it appears in the document. The current instance of the word that you\u2019re on is highlighted in dark green, whereas the other instances of the word are highlighted in light green.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-760731\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Highlighted-words-in-Google-Docs..png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Highlighted words in Google Docs.\" width=\"354\" height=\"126\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You can click the up or down arrow to the right of the search box to navigate between the instances the word or phrase appears in the document.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-760732\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Click-the-up-and-down-arrow..png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Click the up and down arrow.\" width=\"356\" height=\"147\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now if you want to replace a word with another word, you\u2019ll need to open the Find and Replace tool. You can do this by clicking the three dots to the right of the search box, by going to Edit &gt; Search and Replace, or by pressing Ctrl+H (Command+H on Mac).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-760734\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Click-Find-and-Replace-in-the-menu..png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Click Find and Replace in the menu.\" width=\"396\" height=\"393\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the Find and Replace window, search for the word you want to find by typing it in the text box next to \u201cFind,\u201d and then type the word you\u2019d like to replace it with in the \u201cReplace With\u201d text box.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-760735\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Type-the-word-youd-like-to-find-and-replace..png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Type the word you'd like to find and replace.\" width=\"500\" height=\"151\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You can replace every instance of that word in the document by clicking the \u201cReplace All\u201d button at the bottom of the window. Or, you can replace the currently-selected word by clicking \u201cReplace.\u201d You can navigate between each instance of the word in Google Docs by clicking the \u201cPrevious\u201d or \u201cNext\u201d buttons.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-760736\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/The-replace-and-navigation-buttons..png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"The replace and navigation buttons.\" width=\"494\" height=\"233\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There are also a couple of options in Find and Replace to narrow your search down even further:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Match Case:<\/strong> This makes the word or phrase entered in the Find box case sensitive. For example, if you type Bear, it will not find any instance of bear.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Match Using Regular Expression:<\/strong> This allows you to use RegEx in addition to normal words or phrases in your search.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ignore Latin Diacritics:<\/strong> This ignores latin diacritics in your search. For example, if you search for resume, it would still find r\u00e9sum\u00e9 if this option is selected.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Click the box next to each option to select them.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-760737\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Select-additional-search-options..png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Select additional search options.\" width=\"496\" height=\"184\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_Note_on_Regular_Expression_RegEx\"><\/span><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" name=\"autotoc_anchor_1\"><\/a>A Note on Regular Expression (RegEx)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cloudsavvyit.com\/921\/how-do-you-actually-use-regex\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Regular Expression<\/a>, often referred to as RegEx, is a sequence of letters, numbers, and special characters that represents a specific search query. At first glance, it may seem overly complicated to use RegEx when you can just type in the word, but RegEx opens up a whole new world of search capabilities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cloudsavvyit.com\/921\/how-do-you-actually-use-regex\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><strong><em>How Do You Actually Use Regex?<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For example, not only can you search for specific words or phrases using RegEx, but you can also search for grammar rules, such as passive voice. So, for example, if you\u2019re a teacher and want students to use active voice instead of passive voice, you could use this RegEx pattern to search for every instance of passive voice in the document:<\/p>\n<pre>b((be(en)?)|(w(as|ere))|(is)|(a(er|m)))(.+(en|ed))([s]|.)<\/pre>\n<p>In our document, we have three instances of passive voice.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-760738\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Find-passive-voice-in-Google-Docs..png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Find passive voice in Google Docs.\" width=\"497\" height=\"327\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Google will highlight each instance of passive voice in the document.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-760739\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Passive-voice-highlighted-in-Google-Docs..png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Passive voice highlighted in Google Docs.\" width=\"415\" height=\"317\" \/><\/p>\n<p>While this specific RegEx pattern is obviously complex, this example is just to highlight the capabilities of RegEx. The only downside is some of the features you\u2019ll find on the desktop version are missing from mobile, such as searching using RegEx patterns.<\/p>\n<p>To get started, launch the app and then tap the document you want to perform a text search in.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-760742\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Select-the-document-in-the-app..png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Select the document in the app.\" width=\"298\" height=\"318\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Next, tap the three dots in the top-right corner of the screen.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-760747\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Tap-the-More-Options-icon..png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"\" width=\"296\" height=\"169\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the menu that appears on the right-hand side of the screen, tap the \u201cFind and Replace\u201d option.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-760743\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Tap-Find-and-Replace..png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Tap Find and Replace.\" width=\"314\" height=\"308\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Use the on-screen keyboard to type the search term in the text box at the top of the next screen. Type the term you want to replace the searched term with, and then tap \u201cReplace\u201d to replace the instance of the term you are currently on, or \u201cAll\u201d to replace every instance of that word in the document.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-760746\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Replace-the-searched-term..png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Replace the searched term.\" width=\"316\" height=\"322\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Note that, although the search isn\u2019t case sensitive, the Replace With feature is. So if you search for \u201cBear\u201d and replace it with \u201cCat,\u201d you\u2019ll end up with something like \u201cThe Cat ate the fish.\u201d The results aren\u2019t always what you expect, so be sure to double-check everything.<\/p>\n<p>Searching for text, or using the Find and Replace feature, is one of the basic features offered in Google Docs that you\u2019ll need to know to become more fluent with the application.
