New York Mayor-Elect Eric Adams app<\/a>ears to be doubling down on his pro-crypto stance, asserting that that schools should incorporate cryptocurrency studies into their curricula.<\/p>\n

Speaking during a Nov. 7 interview<\/a> with CNN\u2019s State of the Union, Adams described cryptocurrency as \u201ca new way of paying for goods and services throughout the entire globe,\u201d urging local schools to equip students for \u201cthe new way of thinking\u201d brought about by blockchain technology<\/a> and digital assets. <\/p>\n

“We must open our schools to teach the technology, to teach this new way of thinking.\u201d <\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Adams also anecdotally noted surprisingly low awareness of crypto among his young constituents. \u201cWhen I talked about blockchain and Bitcoins, young people on the street stopped and asked me, \u2018What is that?\u2019\u201d said the 61-year-old Democrat.<\/p>\n

He also indicated plans to encourage New York businesses to accept Bitcoin (BTC) and other cryptocurrencies as a form of payment, saying he would \u201ctread carefully\u201d and \u201cget it right.\u201d\u00a0The mayor-elect added that New York must remain a \u201ccentre of innovation, no matter what that innovation is.\u201d<\/p>\n

Adams\u2019 comments have been met with mixed reactions from the crypto community on social media<\/a>.<\/p>\n

User \u201cnimadows<\/a>\u201d stated crypto studies \u201cmust\u2019 become incorporated into school curricula, asserting that new investors must be equipped with \u201can open mind and sufficient knowledge\u201d before braving the digital asset markets.<\/p>\n

Others criticised the proposition, with \u201cInnocenceCapit1\u201d characterizing cryptocurrency as \u201cspeculative garbage.\u201d Schools should be focused on \u201csuccessfully teach[ing] math, history, science<\/a>, language and actual financial concepts first,\u201d they added<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Invoking recent criticisms<\/a> of Adams from Harvard economist Jason Furman, Twitter user \u201cOnlyAPrimate\u201d described the mayor-elect\u2019s recent cheerleading for digital assets as \u201ckind of grifty” given Adams\u2019 intention to receive his first three mayoral paychecks in the form of BTC. <\/p>\n

\u201cI really like Eric Adams but I don’t think his job description is pumping up a crypto-currency that [he] is about to be paid in. It seems kind of grifty,\u201d they posted<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The incoming mayor\u2019s policy platform includes transforming the city into the US\u2019 crypto hub. Adams also said in a Wednesday interview with Bloomberg Radio that he plans to explore setting up a city crypto coin in New York similar to MiamiCoin. <\/p>\n

New York wouldn\u2019t be the first city in the US to implement a study program including crypto. In March this year, The Georgia House of Representatives passed a bill calling for state education officials to implement a financial literacy program including crypto in high schools. <\/p>\n
