So when you forget your Gmail password, and I don\u2019t want to overstate things here, it\u2019s basically like you\u2019re an Internet ghost haunting the halls of your former life.<\/p>\n<p>Okay, it\u2019s not that bad. But you\u2019ll want to change your password and gain access to your account as quickly as possible.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Gmails_Standard_Recovery_Procedure\"><\/span>Gmail\u2019s Standard Recovery Procedure<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ol class=\"justthesteps\">\n<li>Head to the Gmail sign-in page and click the \u201cForgot Password\u201d link.<\/li>\n<li>Enter the last password you remember. If you can\u2019t remember one, click \u201cTry a different question.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Enter the secondary email address you used when you set up your Gmail account to get a password reset email.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Gmail has a few different ways to confirm your identity and recover (or reset) your password. Thankfully, they\u2019re all laid out in a nice little wizard that Gmail will walk you through step-by-step.<\/p>\n<p>Starting the password\u00a0recovery process is pretty easy: just click the \u201cforgot password\u201d link on <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/mail.google.com\/mail\/\">the Gmail sign-in page<\/a>. You\u2019ll then be shown a message asking you to put in the last password you\u00a0<em>can\u00a0<\/em>remember. If you can remember a correct password <em>and\u00a0<\/em>you have a backup system set up, you\u2019ll then be asked to continue in a variety of ways.\u00a0If you can\u2019t remember any of them, click \u201ctry a different question.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"admonishment_update\"><p><strong>Update, 11\/8\/21:<\/strong> Google is no longer requesting that you enter any passwords you remember. Instead, Gmail will jump straight into sending a code to your recovery email address or asking you for more information to help recover your account.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-305017\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/img_5902975481a49.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Enter the last Google or Gmail password that you remember and then click &quot;Next.&quot; \" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The next option will send a code\u00a0to a recovery email, which rather presumes that you\u00a0<em>have\u00a0<\/em>a secondary recovery email (which you set up way back when you created your Gmail account in the first place). Using this option will send a six-digit code to your secondary email account (which doesn\u2019t need to be Gmail) that will allow you to set up a new password and regain access to your account.<\/p>\n<p>Check your mail on this secondary account to see the code, then enter it to unlock a new password generator. Newer accounts may also have a phone number backup option\u2014see below.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-305011\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/img_590293224c717.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Copy the recovery code from your secondary email account and paste it into the Gmail box.\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>If that doesn\u2019t work\u2014like, say, you don\u2019t have access to the account that you originally designated as a backup either\u2014click \u201ctry a different question\u201d again. Now we\u2019re getting into older, less secure methods of account protection, like security questions such as \u201cwhat\u2019s your mother\u2019s maiden name.\u201d You should be able to answer at least one of these.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-305012\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/img_5902937ba5077.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Alternative, answer your backup security questions.\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>At this point, create a new password and confirm it. Now you have access to your account again. Here\u2019s a primer on how to choose a new password that\u2019s both secure and memorable.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Secure_Your_Account\"><\/span>Secure Your Account<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>After you\u2019ve set up a new password, Google will prompt you to check the security settings associated with your Gmail account (and your greater Google account in <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>). We highly recommend adding\u00a0a phone number and a current backup email, if you don\u2019t already have these associated with your account. They\u2019ll allow easy recovery through a 6-digit pin delivered by email or text message.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-305013\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/img_5902941b0bd97.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Check your Gmail's recovery information such as phone number and recovery email.\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Though Gmail formerly supported security questions, it no longer allows you to add any new ones, only delete access to old ones. This is a measure put in place because security questions kind of suck at providing actual security.
