households, a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/papers.ssrn.com\/sol3\/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3934028\" class=\"icon none\">new working paper<\/a> from research fellows at the University of California, San Diego and the University of Chicago concludes.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       \u201cThey spend less overall, visit grocery stores less and convenience stores more frequently and spend a smaller share of their baskets on fresh produce and alcohol but a larger share on tobacco,\u201d the researchers said. \u201cThey spend similar shares on unhealthy foods like cakes, candy, and salty snacks.\u201d The paper was distributed Monday by the National Bureau of Economic Research.<\/p>\n<div data-layout=\"inline\n                \" data-layout-mobile=\"\" class=\"\n          media-object\n          type-InsetPullQuote\n            inline\n    scope-web|mobileapps\n  article__inset\n          article__inset--type-InsetPullQuote\n            article__inset--inline\n  \"><\/p>\n<div class=\"wsj-article-pullquote article__inset__pullquote \">\n<p class=\"pullquote-content article__inset__pullquote__quote\">\n        <span class=\"l-qt article__inset__pullquote__mark--left\">\u201c<\/span>\u2018They spend similar shares on unhealthy foods like cakes, candy, and salty snacks.\u2019<span class=\"r-qt article__inset__pullquote__mark--right\">\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>       Using a survey panel of 112,736 households that connects shopping behavior with individual medical information, the authors \u2014 Katherine Meckel from U.C. San Diego and Bradley Shapiro from the University of Chicago \u2014 say they showed a \u201crobust\u201d cross-sectional relationship between depression and shopping.<\/p>\n<p> But there are factors that are difficult to account for in this data. For instance, a person may begin having symptoms of depression but not be sure or even aware that they have depression until well after their shopping and consumption behavior has already changed, Meckel and Shapiro said.  <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere may be some self medication through the use of tobacco,\u201d they wrote. Depression is classified as a mood disorder, and can be exhibited as sadness or even anger. Shopping, some mental-health and addiction experts say, may provide a temporary escape from such feelings. <\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Impulse_shopping\"><\/span>Impulse shopping<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>Previous research published in 2017 in<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/jcr\/article-abstract\/43\/6\/1031\/2687775\/Control-Deprivation-Motivates-Acquisition-of?redirectedFrom=fulltext\" class=\"icon none\">\u00a0the Journal of Consumer Research\u00a0<\/a>on the relationship between consumerism and emotional health has suggested that impulse shoppers tend to buy certain products, but not the kind of designer splurges that are often portrayed in the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConsumers who experience a loss of control are more likely to buy products that are more functional in nature, such as screwdrivers and dish detergent, because these are typically associated with problem solving, which may enhance people\u2019s sense of control,\u201d the researchers said.<\/p>\n<div data-layout=\"inline\n                \" data-layout-mobile=\"\" class=\"\n          media-object\n          type-InsetPullQuote\n            inline\n    scope-web|mobileapps\n  article__inset\n          article__inset--type-InsetPullQuote\n            article__inset--inline\n  \"><\/p>\n<div class=\"wsj-article-pullquote article__inset__pullquote \">\n<p class=\"pullquote-content article__inset__pullquote__quote\">\n        <span class=\"l-qt article__inset__pullquote__mark--left\">\u201c<\/span>\u2018Consumers who experience a loss of control are more likely to buy products that are more functional.\u2019<span class=\"r-qt article__inset__pullquote__mark--right\">\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>       In one study, participants were asked to recall a situation in which they felt a high sense of control after shopping. They bought more practical products, such as cooking ingredients and household cleaners. One theory: It may be that they are familiar household brands and simply remind them of their childhood.<\/p>\n<p> The best way to avoid overspending due to depression, anxiety or other mental-health issues is to stick to shopping lists, and make buying as difficult as possible.
