\nPrince Harry<\/strong> isn\u2019t mincing words.<\/p>\n

Ever since leaving the Royal Family \u2014 which the press dubbed \u201cMegxit\u201d after wife Meghan Markle<\/strong> \u2014 Harry has been upfront about his issues with his family and struggles in the public eye. He and Meg have also dedicated themselves to philanthropy and activism for causes they care about personally. And one of those causes just so happ<\/a>ens to intersect with the \u201cMegxit\u201d phenomenon.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, the Duke of Sussex participated in the \u201cInternet Lie Machine\u201d panel discussion at Wired<\/em> magazine\u2019s RE:WIRED<\/strong> virtual summit in NYC, where he discussed misinformation with experts. While it\u2019s a topic that has affected us all in some way, it\u2019s particularly near and dear to Harry\u2019s heart. He explained:<\/p>\n

\u201cI felt it personally over the years, and I\u2019m now watching it happen globally affecting everyone, not just America, literally everyone around the world. I learned from a very early age that the incentives of publishing are not necessarily aligned with the incentives of the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The 37-year-old cited some of his personal experience, like the fact that \u201cmore than 70 percent of the hate speech about my wife on Twitter<\/a><\/strong> can be traced to fewer than 50 accounts.\u201d In fact, he shared:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe term \u2018Megxit\u2019 was or is a misogynistic term that was created by a troll, amplified by world correspondents, and it grew and grew and grew onto mainstream media. But it began with a troll.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Princess Diana<\/strong>\u2019s son added:<\/p>\n

\u201cI know the story all too well. I lost my mother to this self-manufactured rabidness, and obviously I\u2019m determined not to lose the mother to my children to the same thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Speaking more general<\/a>ly, the father of two called misinformation \u201ca global humanitarian crisis,\u201d saying:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe scale of misinformation now is terrifying. No one\u2019s safe from it, no one is protected from it. You can\u2019t hide from it and we continue to see lives ruined, families destroyed in one single household.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The military vet accused tabloid journalists of \u201camplifying the hate and the lies,\u201d and \u201c[regurgitating] these lies as truth.\u201d He stated:<\/p>\n

\u201cThis isn\u2019t just a social media problem. It\u2019s a media problem. I\u2019ve grown up learning that news<\/a> should be sacred ground. You don\u2019t have to be [Succession<\/em>\u2019s] Logan Roy or Rupert Murdoch<\/strong> to understand that clickbait is the descendant of targeted advertising.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

As grim as the outlook may be, the prince shared some optimism as well:<\/p>\n

\u201cReal journalists have the power and the will to tackle racism, misogyny, lies, all of it from within their own systems.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

He also reaffirmed his commitment to the cause, observing:<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople now more than ever want and need truth. They want and need trust, and they want and need transparency. We\u2019re here to support them in any way possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

This seems like a really worthy issue to tackle, especially for someone who has felt the effects of it so personally. We hope Harry using his platform in this way will make a difference in stopping the spread of misinformation.<\/p>\n
