Danchenko helped Steele compile the dossier, which put forth several outrageous allegations \u2014 including that Russian security services possessed a tape of Donald Trump in a Moscow hotel room with prostitutes who were urinating on a bed where then-President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama had previously stayed.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, Wemple said the indictment revealed that the sourcing behind the file was \u201cthreadbare in the most charitable of depictions,\u201d as were initial media reports about the dossier\u2019s contents. <\/p>\n<p>One example Wemple cited was reporting by the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post and ABC News in 2017 alleging that the most headline-grabbing claims in the dossier \u2014 including the supposed existence of the \u201cpee tape\u201d \u2014 came from Sergei Millian, former president of the Russian-American Chamber of Commerce.<\/p>\n<p>However, Danchenko\u2019s recent indictment claims that while Danchenko \u201cnever spoke\u201d to Millian, Steele believed Danchenko had \u201cdirect contact\u201d with Millian.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"852\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/11\/john-durham-1.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024\" alt=\"John Durham\" class=\"wp-image-20080965\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/11\/john-durham-1.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1536 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/11\/john-durham-1.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/11\/john-durham-1.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Special counsel John Durham previously came under fire by MSNBC\u2019s Rachel Maddow, who claimed he was trying to unfairly discredit the Russia investigation.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">U.S. Department of Justice via AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cNews organizations may face a mismatch as they place their reporting alongside the indictment,\u201d he wrote. \u201cWhere the indictment relies on emails, interviews and other powerful investigative tools, the Journal\u2019s initial scoop cited a single anonymous source. The sourcing for the Post\u2019s reporting about Millian\u2019s alleged conversation is unclear, while ABC News attributes its primary assertion to \u2018a person familiar with the raw intelligence provided to the FBI.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese news outlets now face a steep journalistic challenge \u2014 that of returning to their source(s) in an effort to back up the original claims that Millian was an unwitting source for the dossier,\u201d Wemple added. \u201cIf that effort doesn\u2019t produce enough evidence to surmount the allegations in the indictment, there\u2019s only one option: Retract the stories.
