This is not because of lack of food, but because\u2014<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/vancouversun.com\/news\/local-news\/lower-income-families-most-likely-to-be-pinched-by-rising-food-prices-supply-chain-problems\">as we\u2019ve recently seen<\/a>\u2014breakdown in supply chains can drive up prices. Logistical hold-ups, factory closures, climate change and labour shortages in the agriculture and agri-food sectors create a domino effect that has strikes all levels of the system.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As this crisis worsens, with no end in sight, food-industry juggernauts like Walmart Canada are experimenting with ways to increase efficiency using blockchain, a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> whose reputation tends to be shrouded in the hype over cryptocurrency.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>lications have nothing to do with Bitcoin, and everything to do with increasing the level of safety, transparency and traceability of food from farm to table. Even though these applications are still in the early stages of development, pilot projects have been promising enough that <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasdaq.com\/articles\/how-blockchain-will-change-the-way-we-work-play-and-stay-healthy-in-the-future-2021-08-26\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blockchain aficionados envision a future<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> where\u2014similar to the internet\u2014it could be hard to imagine life (and food) without it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_exactly_is_blockchain\"><\/span><b>What exactly is blockchain?\u00a0<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First things first. A blockchain is a decentralized network that records, stores and encrypts blocks of data. These blocks are chained together using a branch of mathematics called cryptography\u2014used to protect transaction information, secure user privacy and encrypt communication between parties\u2014to form a chronological digital ledger.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The blocks of data in a blockchain are verified by a network of devices and computers called \u201cnodes\u201d that all have a copy of the same data. There are often thousands of nodes that form the infrastructure of a blockchain. Nodes enable blockchain technology to be decentralized since the network does not rely on a centralized server.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe need trusted records so ubiquitously through everything we do in society, so I think there is enormous potential for blockchain to become that architecture of trust for society,\u201d said Victoria Lemieux, an associate professor at the University of British Columbia who leads the Blockchain@UBC research cluster. \u201c[Blockchain] could be as widespread as the internet.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blockchain is considered both a foundational and disruptive technology for its potential to create new processes for economic and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a> systems. Applications of blockchain have already unlocked possibilities for individuals, large corporations and governments. Digital currencies, for example, could soon be a viable payment method recognized by financial institutions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Isnt_Bitcoin_and_cryptocurrency_the_same_thing_as_blockchain\"><\/span><b>Isn\u2019t Bitcoin and cryptocurrency the same thing as blockchain?\u00a0<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A common misconception. While it makes cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin possible, blockchain has other applications could help large businesses increase efficiency and digitize archaic practices.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) built on the open-sourced Ethereum blockchain network can be used to prove the ownership of both digital and tangible goods. Other\u00a0 uses are already in the works: by large companies to <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/2036529\/more-than-450-airlines-can-now-use-ibms-digital-health-pass\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">secure personal identification,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and by the Estonian government to <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/e-estonia.com\/blockchain-healthcare-estonian-experience\/#:~:text=Estonia%2C%20home%20to%20one%20of,healthcare%20on%20a%20national%20scale.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">verify health records<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNot every blockchain application is trying to eliminate the intermediary,\u201d says Harish Krishnan, a professor at UBC who specializes in the uses of blockchain in supply chains. \u201cSome applications of blockchain are trying to make the intermediary more efficient.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_can_blockchain_be_applied_to_food_supply_systems\"><\/span><b>How can blockchain be applied to food supply systems?\u00a0<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The process of getting food from farm to table is complex, especially so for food that <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a>s long distances and is available year-round (in Canada, think sweet potatoes, watermelon, avocados and rice).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the beginning of the food supply chain are farmers, growing and harvesting crops. Yet farmers often lose visibility of the harvested crop once it is processed and distributed, as it passes through many players in the supply chain including trucking companies, manufacturers, ports, carriers, importers, exporters and government agencies until, finally, it makes it to retailers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If problems arise\u2014say, a safety issue requiring a recall\u2014it could take weeks to track the origin of the specific batch of affected food, leaving the suppliers and producers no choice but to discard all of that product, most of which is perfectly fit to consume.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Replacing current processes with a single digital ecosystem run on a blockchain \u201cwould not be revolutionary but evolutionary,\u201d says Erik Valiquette, the president of the Canadian Blockchain Supply Chain Association. It could be used to store timestamped activity and verify transactions throughout the food supply chain, says Valiquette, while working in synergy with other technologies like artificial intelligence, robotics, scanners and the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jacobmorgan\/2014\/05\/13\/simple-explanation-internet-things-that-anyone-can-understand\/?sh=503ace301d09\">internet of things<\/a> to create an infrastructure more efficient and transparent than the one currently in use.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Will_the_average_shopper_care_about_this\"><\/span>Will the average shopper care about this?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shoppers are more and more discriminating. They know, for example, that\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">products on grocery store shelves are labelled as having come from a specific place, or produced under a subset of ethical guidelines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But some players within the food supply chain can still deceive as to the origin of the crop or product. This remains a significant problem, most recently affecting a slew of tomato products marked as being made from Italian-grown tomatoes. An investigation by CBC Marketplace, Investigative Reporting Project Italy and the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guardian<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> revealed that the tomatoes actually originated on a farm in Xinjiang, China that used the forced labour of ethnic minorities, including Uy\u200b\u200bghur Muslims who have been subject to mass detention and torture in what has been described as a campaign of genocide by the Chinese government.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1230600\" style=\"width: 3553px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-sizes=\"auto\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1230600 lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.macleans.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/FOOD-SING-NOV11.jpg\" alt=\"Clementines being harvested in Corigliano-Rossano, Calabria, Italy. (Alfonso di Vincenzo\/IPA\/via CP)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While blockchain does not protect against what the old adage describes as \u201cgarbage in, garbage out\u201d\u2014that is, the input of inaccurate information that is propagated throughout a system\u2014it could play a role in holding accountable those who enter the bad information. If everyone in the supply chain could trace back the absolute origin of goods in real time, the information on food products would be much more difficult to alter, overwrite or tamper with.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAll players will be forced to take a step back, look at their processes and make sure that the data-entry mechanisms are accurate,\u201d said Valiquette. \u201cWill that keep an actor from putting in bad information? Probably not. But by automating certain processes, talking with industry partners, and building a system together, the chances of bad information are greatly reduced.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Could_a_food_supply_chain_run_on_the_blockchain_address_food_security\"><\/span><b>Could a food supply chain run on the blockchain address food security?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The inefficiencies at all levels of the supply chain have hit Canadians directly in their wallets, with overall grocery bills increasing more than four per cent, edible fats and oils rising 18.5 per cent, and domestic pork products like bacon and ham jumping 15.5 per cent from a year ago, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www150.statcan.gc.ca\/t1\/tbl1\/en\/tv.action?pid=1810000403\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to Statistics Canada<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. There is an adequate supply of food in this country. But if prices continue to rise, rates of food insecurity will almost certainly continue to rise with them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blockchain could be used to lower food prices, decrease food waste and increase food safety, says UBC\u2019s Krishnan, but those intentions must be factored in when developing and creating the infrastructure: \u201cA blockchain is a tool, and how you use the tool and for what purpose you use the tool really determines how helpful it is going to be to address certain problems.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While companies could design a blockchain that contributes to food security, they could also have other goals in mind, says Krishnan, such as \u201cselling premium foods, and commanding a higher price for it.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Premium_foods_on_the_blockchain\"><\/span><b>Premium foods on the blockchain?\u00a0<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You heard that right. Most consumers already pay a premium for organic, free-range and sustainable products. In the years to come, they may be able to trace such features themselves through blockchain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Companies could choose to put certain information on a public blockchain that could be accessed by consumers through scanning a QR code provided on the packaging. This extra layer of verification would give consumers the ability to trace the origins of the food, or determine whether the company used forced labour and followed good practices. They might view which, if any, pesticides and chemicals were used (or not used) to grow or manufacture the food, or timestamps showing the exactly when the food was processed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"When_will_blockchain_be_used_in_the_food_supply_chain\"><\/span><b>When will blockchain be used in the food supply chain?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is still an emerging technology, so these applications are still years away from mainstream adoption. Although large tech companies and a slew of startups have made impressive headway on creating efficient private enterprise applications, universal literacy on blockchain and its applications is necessary at all levels of the food supply chain\u2014from farmers to consumers\u2014before it can be properly implemented.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, the research and development of blockchain-powered solutions in the food supply chain are mostly funded by companies\u2014like <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/katevitasek\/2020\/01\/31\/walmart-canada-and-dlt-labs-launch-worlds-largest-industrial-blockchain-application\/?sh=648a430f3d2e\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Walmart<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/robertanzalone\/2020\/06\/04\/ibm-blockchain-technology-is-growing-in-the-food-industry-during-covid-19\/?sh=7a2967c67f07\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IBM<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014that already hold a high concentration of market power. These are so-called \u201cprivate permission\u201d blockchains, which are more centralized than public, \u201cpermissionless\u201d blockchains (like Bitcoin and Ethereum). All of the nodes powering a private blockchain system are controlled by a single provider.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is likely, then, that the large companies fronting the cost of investment in blockchain processes within the food supply system would have control over who can participate in them and who can decide what gets recorded on the ledger.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But adopting blockchain systems is costly, meaning small-scale farmers and independent grocers may be shut out. Krishnan and others warn that this would entrench the power of the bigger players\u2014especially if smaller players have little choice but to use a blockchain database governed by the larger companies.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Experts say that, with federal government intervention, a blockchain could be rolled out that is designed to create a more equitable food system, decreasing waste and increasing the bargaining power of small farmers. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That puts us at something of a crossroads.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPeople underestimate the power of these tools,\u201d said Krishnan. \u201cIf we are not careful about insisting that they are governed in ways that are going to contribute to certain things that as a society we value, we are abdicating our responsibility.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Nathan Sing writes about food security and hunger issues in Canada.
