\n Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Sunday panned calls to \u201cdefund\u201d police departments spurred by unrest in the wake of George Floyd\u2019s death, pointing to looting that ravaged the Big App<\/a>le last week.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have New York City, that is still reeling from the COVID virus, and now you have this night of looting, that I\u2019m telling you shook people in the city to the core,\u201d Cuomo told reporters in Albany. \u201cYou don\u2019t need police? You don\u2019t need police?<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s what happens when you don\u2019t have effective policing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cuomo was referring to opportunists who co-opted what were supposed to be peaceful protests demanding justice for Floyd \u2014 a black man killed May 25 after a white Minneapolis cop knelt on his neck \u2014 to ransack businesses across the city.<\/span><\/p>\n

Though the looters ran roughshod over parts of Manhattan, The Bronx and Brooklyn for a few nights in the early part of the week \u2014 leading Cuomo to call out the NYPD, criticism he l<\/span>ater walked back \u2014 the situation stabilized as the week wound on.<\/p>\n

\u201cLook at that looting,\u201d said Cuomo. \u201cIt was frightening. \u2026 [When there\u2019s] no police, you get looting. That\u2019s what you get.<\/p>\n

\u201cNobody wants that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cuomo\u2019s remarks came shortly after de Blasio announced that an unspecified amount of funding originally earmarked for the NYPD would be reallocated to city youth groups.<\/p>\n

Hizzoner has faced a growing number of calls from activists, members of the City Council and educators to slash the NYPD\u2019s $6 billion annual budget.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
