\n Federal agents deployed to protests in Portland to protect federal court buildings will begin a phased withdrawal from the city on Thursday, Oregon Gov. Kate Brown said Wednesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter my discussions with VP Pence and others, the federal government has agreed to withdraw federal officers from Portland,\u201d Brown said in a tweet. \u201cThey have acted as an occupying force & brought violence. Starting tomorrow, all Customs and Border Protection & ICE officers will leave downtown Portland.\u201d<\/p>\n

The acting head of the Department of Homeland Security, Chad Wolf, added in a separate statement that he anticipates the agency to \u201cchange our force posture\u201d if circumstances on the ground in the city change.<\/p>\n

Wolf said he and Brown had agreed to a joint plan to end \u201cviolent activity\u201d in the city aimed at federal buildings.<\/p>\n

\u201cState and local law enforcement will begin securing properties and streets, especially those surrounding federal properties, that have been under nightly attack for the past two months,\u201d Wolf said in the statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cOregon State Police will coordinate with Federal Protective Service (FPS) officers to ensure all federal facilities remain protected and secure,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

The federal officers and protesters have been clashing nightly since their deployment in early July amid growing demand for withdrawal from Oregon officials.<\/p>\n

The city has endured two months of protest and riots since the police-involved death of George Floyd.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
