\n Mayor Bill de Blasio on Sunday ripped cops for not wearing face masks while controlling the tens of thousands at George Floyd protests amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve seen too many officers who just have [masks] off, and it\u2019s painful to people because it feels like they\u2019re flouting the rules,\u201d he said during a press conference Sunday, calling it a \u201chuman decency thing\u201d amid the ongoing threat from the contagion.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt frustrates me to no end. We have to do better in the NYPD,\u201d de Blasio complained, saying he had confronted NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea to insist his officers start adhering to the safety rules.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would say to all the officers out there, I know you have a hard job, but do unto others,\u201d Hizzoner said at a virtual press briefing.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf we\u2019re asking everyone else to follow the rules \u2014 social<\/a> distancing, wear a face covering \u2014 you should do it too,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Police previously ought with the de Blasio administration over the availability of masks \u2014 with health commissioner Oxiris Barbot reportedly telling NYPD chief Terrence Monahan that she didn\u2019t give \u201ctwo rats\u2019 asses\u201d about NYPD cops\u2019 need for masks.<\/p>\n

She eventually apologized and hundreds of thousands of surgical masks were provided to the NYPD \u2014 though photos and witness reports indicate they rarely wore them during protest activity, including Monahan himself.<\/p>\n

Hizzoner conceded that there may at times be a \u201clegitimate, tactical reason\u201d for officers having to temporarily remove their masks \u2014 ones the department had to fight to get in the first place.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s not the only thing we\u2019ve seen,\u201d he stressed, noting that many were simply shrugging off safety because it was hot and the masks can be uncomfortable for long stretches of time.<\/p>\n

\u201cToo often it looks like it\u2019s being ignored and that\u2019s not acceptable,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve had this conversation with the commissioner \u2014 I expect to see improvement in this area.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
