Today, we\u2019re watching a video essay about the recognition shot, and how it <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ears in Phantom Lady and Sorry, Wrong Number.&lt;\/em&gt;\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<hr\/>\n<p>In the 1940s, Hollywood saw a boom of crime films that put women at the center of investigative intrigue. Throughout the decade, a slew of genre films focused on an amateur female investigator: she\u2019s curious, she\u2019s tenacious, and most importantly, she\u2019s on the case. Films like Anthony Mann\u2019s <em>Two O\u2019Clock Courage\u00a0<\/em>and Harold Clurman\u2019s\u00a0<em>Deadline at Dawn<\/em>\u00a0gave inquisitive, resourceful women a sense of detective <em>agency<\/em>, if you will.<\/p>\n<p>And another two of those films, 1944\u2019s <em><strong>Phantom Lady <\/strong><\/em>and 1948\u2019s\u00a0<strong><em>Sorry, Wrong Number<\/em><\/strong>, feature a very similar visual cue: a <strong>dolly-in<\/strong> that occurs right as our heroines experience a moment of recognition.<\/p>\n<p><em>Phantom Lady <\/em>(which, as it happens, was produced by Universal Pictures\u2019 first female executive, Joan Harrison), follows Carol \u201cKansas\u201d Richman (Ella Raines) an ambitious secretary attempting to prove her boss\u00a0<em>didn\u2019t\u00a0<\/em>kill his wife by tracking down the key to his alibi: a mysterious woman no one seems to remember. In her moment of recognition, Kansas deduces the name of the phantom lady\u2019s distinctive hat. It\u2019s a joyous \u201cah-ha!\u201d moment in which she confidently locates another piece of the puzzle.<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0<em>Sorry, Wrong Number, <\/em>a wheelchair-bound heiress (Barbara Stanwyck) overhears a conversation about a plan to kill a woman. In her moment of recognition, she learns that the target of the murder plot she\u2019s been investigating is herself. It is dread-soaked and full of despair at the suggested violence headed her way.<\/p>\n<p>Using a dolly-in is a stylish and compellingly subjective way to represent a character connecting the dots.
