{"id":368606,"date":"2021-11-17T20:34:13","date_gmt":"2021-11-17T17:34:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/do-not-underestimate-erin-otoole\/"},"modified":"2021-11-17T20:34:13","modified_gmt":"2021-11-17T17:34:13","slug":"do-not-underestimate-erin-otoole","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/do-not-underestimate-erin-otoole\/","title":{"rendered":"#&#8217;Do not underestimate Erin O&#8217;Toole&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#&#8217;Do not underestimate Erin O&#8217;Toole&#8217;<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n                            Politics Insider for Nov. 17, 2021: The party begins to fray; a meet with Biden; and strong vaccination views\n                        <\/div>\n<div>\n                                                                        So, as I was flipping through the day\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> to write up this newsletter, I read my colleague Paul Wells\u2019s column about how <strong>Erin O\u2019Toole<\/strong> has gone extremely to ground, even with an attempted public knifing in the offing by Senator <strong>Denise Batters<\/strong>, who has publicly <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/news\/politics\/conservative-senator-launches-petition-to-conduct-early-review-of-erin-otooles-leadership\">petitioned<\/a> for a leadership review. Paul traces the similarities\u00a0between 2021 and 2019 for the Conservatives: a mixed-bag election result giving rise to a dump-the-leader instinct, a muddy idea of who the replacement should be, radio silence from the man himself.<\/p>\n<p>Two things can pull together a frayed party, Paul writes, and one of them is the political power currently not afforded the No. 2 party in the House of Commons. So that leaves only option B. \u201cIn the absence of a crisis, or indeed much of anything else, a party is left alone with <strong>the voices in its head<\/strong>,\u201d he writes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You\u2019ve Got Mail:<\/strong> And then\u00a0just as I was thinking about how to write up that column, a new missive arrived in my inbox: \u201cStatement from Conservative Leader Erin O\u2019Toole.\u201d Well, you don\u2019t say. \u201cSenator Denise Batters has been removed from the Conservative National Caucus,\u201d it began. Ooooh. \u201cAs the Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, I will not tolerate an individual discrediting and showing a clear lack of respect towards the efforts of the entire Conservative caucus, who are holding the corrupt and disastrous Trudeau government to account,\u201d O\u2019Toole said.<\/p>\n<p>And in case the broader message wasn\u2019t entirely clear, <strong>Dan Robertson<\/strong>, O\u2019Toole\u2019s chief of strategy, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/pdrobertson\/status\/1460773038002212872\">tweeted<\/a> a few minutes later, \u201cDo not underestimate\u00a0@erinotoole.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Look, I\u2019m not saying official Ottawa definitely reads <em>Maclean\u2019s<\/em>, but\u2026 &lt;raises eyebrow, taps finger on side of nose&gt;<\/p>\n<p><strong>You Also Have Mail:<\/strong> Okay, wait, I am trying to write this thing in some coherent thematic order but things just keep h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ening,\u00a0so let\u2019s just do this live-blog style. So then half an hour after O\u2019Toole issued his statement about giving Batters the boot, she returned fire with a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/denisebatters\/status\/1460778124208218120\">tweet<\/a> that read, \u201cTonight, Erin O\u2019Toole tried to silence me for giving our #CPC members a voice. I will not be silenced by a leader so weak that he fired me VIA VOICEMAIL. Most importantly, he cannot suppress the will of our Conservative Party members! Sign the petition: <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.membersvote.ca\/\">membersvote.ca<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I think it\u2019s safe to assume there will be much more on this fracas in the news tomorrow, so stay tuned for updates. &lt;Glances back and forth to see what else is incoming&gt; We good? Okay, onward to things that are not the Conservative party gnawing furiously on each other\u2019s legs\u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong>Just Tri Me:<\/strong> Meanwhile, over at the red team, Prime Minister <strong>Justin Trudeau<\/strong> says that in his one-on-one meeting with President <strong>Joe Biden<\/strong> at the White House later this week during the revived \u201cThree Amigos\u201d trilateral summit, he will <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/politics\/article-trudeau-to-push-back-against-us-protectionism-in-one-one-meeting-with\/\">press<\/a>\u00a0Biden on his Buy American policy and emphasize the importance to both countries of continental trade and interconnected supply chains.<\/p>\n<p>Biden\u2019s protectionist stance, popular with trade unions and Democrats in Congress, is focused on the auto sector\u00a0and infrastructure projects, and many business and industry leaders in Canada have sounded the alarm on its impact and limitations.\u00a0\u201cSince the election of Mr. Biden, we have talked about our concerns with respect to Buy American, which poses a particular challenge not only for companies and workers here in Canada, but also in the United States, because of the integration of our supply chains and our economies in <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>,\u201d Trudeau said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Team Canuck:<\/strong> To that end, Canadian Press\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalnewswatch.com\/2021\/11\/16\/joly-freeland-ng-and-mendicino-to-take-part-in-summit-with-trudeau-in-d-c\/#.YZRfyNbMJYj\">reports<\/a>\u00a0that the\u00a0trilateral meetings in Washington between Canadian, American and Mexican leaders will feature a \u201cTeam Canada\u201d approach like the one that shepherded through the fractious NAFTA negotiations during the reign of that shouty tangerine fellow you don\u2019t hear much about anymore. New Foreign Affairs Minister\u00a0<strong>M\u00e9lanie\u00a0Joly<\/strong> will join Trudeau, along with Finance Minister <strong>Chrystia Freeland<\/strong>,\u00a0International Trade Minister <strong>Mary Ng<\/strong> and Public Safety Minister <strong>Marco Mendicino<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Get the shot or get out<\/strong>: An Angus Reid poll found that a majority of Canadians support people losing their jobs if they won\u2019t get vaccinated. \u201cAlmost 70 per cent of respondents supported the idea of firing on-board airline employees, school teachers, police officers, paramedics, firefighters and medical professionals if they did not get COVID-19 shots,\u201d Global News reports.
