“#Don Johnson & Cheech Marin on Revisiting San Fran’s Coolest Cop Partners<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

If not for Don Johnson\u2019s gray goatee, this could be 1996 all over again. The dogged Nash Bridges hurtles down San Francisco\u2019s hilly streets chasing a bad guy in his signature yellow \u2019Cuda convertible. His longtime partner in the Special Investigations Unit, Joe Dominguez (Cheech Marin), holds on for dear life. The familiar scene opens a new USA<\/a> movie, with the potential to reboot the lighthearted CBS<\/a> cop show 20 years after the series<\/a> ended.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe got in the \u2019Cuda, and it felt like we had never left,\u201d Johnson says. Marin agrees: \u201cIt felt like old times.\u201d<\/p>\n

In 2021, Nash Bridges<\/i> is a bit nostalgic for USA, once the home of blue-sky dramedies like Psych<\/i><\/a> and Royal Pains<\/i><\/a>. But Johnson, who has recently done fare both dark (HBO\u2019s<\/a> Watchmen<\/i><\/a>) and light (NBC\u2019s<\/a> Kenan<\/i><\/a>), is betting that viewers will turn out. \u201cI thought, especially during this time, it can bring some joy and action,\u201d he says. \u201c\u2018Comfort food\u2019: That\u2019s how I\u2019m referring to myself these days.\u201d<\/p>\n

Following the fast-paced opening\u2014replete with a gunfight, an explosion and banter\u2014the movie jumps ahead a year. Suspended after the collateral damage of that pursuit, Nash is a part-time bounty hunter still obsessed with nailing the rich sex trafficker who walked, while Joe owns (surprise!) a legal marijuana dispensary.<\/p>\n

When bodies start piling up, stumping the homicide department, Capt. Lena Harris (Diarra Kilpatrick) invites Nash back to the SIU with a warning: \u201cCowboy cop days are over.\u201d Just don\u2019t call him a dinosaur, as his by-the-book millennial supervisor, Steven Colton (Joe Dinicol), does before a fistfight. (Johnson, 71, keeps fit with yoga.) Nash and Joe play more nicely with the team\u2019s young guns, Ellie Tang (Angela Ko) and Keith \u201cPhilly\u201d Morton (Paul James), and IT chief Chloe Zane (Alexia Garcia). Nash also flirts with shrink Christina Hunter (Bonnie Somerville).<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve managed to bring the fun and chemistry that the original had,\u201d says Johnson. Fans will also recognize Jeff Perry, back as tech-savvy eccentric Harvey Leek, now a paranoid conspiracy theorist and handy when cyberwarfare and nanotechnology<\/a> enter the movie\u2019s plot.<\/p>\n

Should the series get the go-ahead, Johnson has a storyline ready for Nash\u2019s daughter, Cassidy (Jodi Lyn O\u2019Keefe), now in military intelligence. \u201cFather and daughter don\u2019t know that they are pursuing the same person\u2014and they run into each other!\u201d We\u2019re in, Bubba.<\/p>\n
