{"id":36910,"date":"2020-07-30T00:10:00","date_gmt":"2020-07-29T21:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/influential-teachers-union-group-rejects-city-halls-school-reopening-plan\/"},"modified":"2020-07-30T00:10:00","modified_gmt":"2020-07-29T21:10:00","slug":"influential-teachers-union-group-rejects-city-halls-school-reopening-plan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/influential-teachers-union-group-rejects-city-halls-school-reopening-plan\/","title":{"rendered":"#Influential teachers union group rejects City Hall\u2019s school reopening plan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Influential teachers union group rejects City Hall\u2019s school reopening plan<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n                        An influential group of city teachers has rejected Mayor de Blasio\u2019s proposed reopening of school buildings in September\u00a0 \u2014 and isn\u2019t ruling out a strike as a last resort.<\/p>\n<p>The Movement of Rank and File Educators caucus of the United Federation of Teachers has already collected nearly 4,000 signatures demanding that schools remain locked until New York has no new COVID cases for 14 days.<\/p>\n<p>The group is also calling for heightened safety precautions and greater funding allocations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur hope is that the DOE, the mayor, the governor will listen to us and change their planned proposal for September so that we aren\u2019t put in a position where we have to consider striking,\u201d said teacher Liat Olenick during a Wednesday press conference<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat last resort is there but we hope we don\u2019t have to use it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The group stressed that health concerns remain unresolved and asserted that the Department of Education didn\u2019t conduct adequate outreach with teachers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe city and UFT leadership had five months to hold meetings with staff, students and families to collect creative ideas, concerns and feedback.\u00a0 Instead, they sent out one multiple choice, poorly advertised survey and came up with a plan that will put staff, students, and families in danger,\u201d the rank-and-file educator\u2019s group, also known as MORE, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>A petition listing the group\u2019s reopening imperatives cautioned that a resumption of classroom learning will endanger kids and teachers.<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAs educators, parents and students, we know that remote learning is a poor substitute for in person learning,\u201d the petition states. \u201cWe know how desperately working caregivers need childcare. And we know how important it is to get children back to in-person learning <\/span><span>But the unfortunate reality is that it will not be safe to go back into classrooms this fall for teachers, staff, students, their families or our communities.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>MORE\u2019s press conference featured teachers, students and others who oppose Mayor de Blasio\u2019s proposed September 10 reopening plan that would have kids alternate between remote and building instruction.<\/p>\n<p>Teacher Emily Choi, who said she contracted the virus and is still recovering, argued that City Hall\u2019s plan is premature and will subject kids to further upheaval.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMandating a physical return to school, in just 6 weeks, will confuse many children and put undue stress on those of us tasked with enforcing <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a> distancing practices especially knowing how young children naturally want to socialize and be physically close to one another,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Special education teacher Karla Reyes contended that the school reopening was being hastened for economic reasons.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe pressure to reopen schools haphazardly is based completely on the pressure to reopen the economy to reap profits for the rich,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The press conference also featured a Bronx nurse and city parent who said he would not send his kid into a city school building if safety needs aren\u2019t addressed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will kill teachers,\u201d said Sean Petty. \u201cIt will probably kill hundreds of teachers.
