Is Britney Spears imprisoned?<\/p>\n<p>The 38-year-old pop star\u2019s lawyers, her father and most recently a \u201ccare manager,\u201d have had legal and professional control over Britney for the last 12 years as part of a complex conservatorship.<\/p>\n<p>But in recent months, concern over the arrangement has grown among skeptical fans who are calling to #FreeBritney.<\/p>\n<p>The devotees have rallied around petitions and chat rooms after what they perceived to be eyebrow-raising <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a>-media posts from the pop star in quarantine \u2014 some linking the troublesome messages to her conservatorship.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI burnt my gym down,\u201d deadpanned a shaky Britney before showing her followers her at-home workout routine in April. \u201cI had two candles and yeah, one thing led to another.\u201d Fans piped up: \u201cBritney are you okay?? We\u2019re all really worried about you,\u201d wrote one commenter. Another: \u201cThis reeks of gaslighting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The story of Britney\u2019s mental health is unfortunately nothing new. She\u2019s had a few bouts in rehabs and mental-health facilities, most recently in 2019 for some \u201cme time\u201d according to the singer. But fans fear that her facilities are in tact and that her management and family are keeping her on a tight leash, and with a firm grasp on the purse strings of her nearly $60 million fortune.<\/p>\n<p>Reps for Britney have not responded to The Post\u2019s request for comment on the status of her conservatorship or fans\u2019 theories surrounding it.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s everything we know about the Britney saga.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Whats_the_latest\"><\/span>What\u2019s the latest?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Britney\u2019s mom, Lynne, is making a play to be more involved in the star\u2019s legal affairs going forward since petitioning the court earlier this month. On Aug. 22, the issue will go to court. The case is being heard by Judge Brenda Penny, who has previously ordered an expert investigation into Britney\u2019s competence.<\/p>\n<p>Just one of the online petitions in support of Britney, specifically for her to be able to \u201chire her own lawyer,\u201d instead of the court-<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ointed one she has, has 241,515 signatures to date. According to the court, Jodi Montgomery, who Spears has worked with for about a year, can\u2019t block Spears from meeting with her court-appointed attorney but can take out restraining orders on her behalf, hire and fire security guards, and has full access to her medical records.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cWomanizer\u201d singer\u2019s social feeds are still being updated with selfies, snaps of her beau Sam Asghari, homemade fashion shows, and most recently, a bizarre video of Britney demonstrating how to use a rose-shaped soap.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-instgrm-captioned=\"\" data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/tv\/CDKTuzyAbbN\/?utm_source=ig_embed&#038;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"12\">\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>On July 28, the star posted another Instagram of herself, covered in henna, writing, \u201cI guess I\u2019m demanding attention.\u201d Wrote one #FreeBritney diehard, \u201cYou have our attention Britney! We see you! We hear you!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, dad Jamie Spears requested that Britney be given a \u201ccare manager\u201d \u2014 Montgomery, a professional fiduciary \u2014 in his place to rep her and her estate. Neither Montgomery nor a rep for Jamie have responded to The Post\u2019s request for comment.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_did_we_get_here\"><\/span>How did we get here?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The \u201cToxic\u201d star dominated the tabloids in the early aughts for her relationship with Justin Timberlake, a 55-hour marriage to Jason Alexander and, of course, her head-shaving breakdown after her marriage to Kevin Federline fell apart.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16055509\"><img alt=\"Spears in 2007\" data- data- height=\"441\" width=\"250\"><\/img><figcaption><span>Spears in 2007<\/span><span>Bauer Griffin\/MEGA<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In 2007, she voluntarily checked out of Eric Clapton\u2019s Crossroads rehab center in Antigua and famously shaved her head in a Los Angeles salon. After, she went to a tattoo parlor to get an inking of a woman\u2019s lips on her wrist. The tattoo artist claimed that Britney told her, \u201cI don\u2019t want anyone touching my hair. I\u2019m sick of people touching my hair,\u201d when asked about her new look.<\/p>\n<p>In 2008, Britney was placed on an involuntary psychiatric hold after not sleeping for five days. It was her second stint in a hospital that year, the first came after refusing to return her sons, Sean Preston and Jayden James, then 2 and 1 respectively, to their father, Federline.<\/p>\n<p>In October 2008, Jamie and her then-attorney Andrew Wallet obtained \u201ctemporary\u201d control of Britney\u2019s finances and estate after those well-publicized incidents.<\/p>\n<p>But Jamie still has control over his daughter\u2019s medical records and which contracts she signs through the conservatorship.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_a_conservatorship\"><\/span>What is a conservatorship?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>According to California law, a conservatorship is when \u201ca judge appoints a responsible person (a conservator) to care for another adult who cannot care for herself or her finances.\u201d The legal guardianship is usually used to protect the very old or those who are mentally or physically disabled to make sure they\u2019re not being taken advantage of.<\/p>\n<p>Eagle-eyed fans on Reddit dredged up paperwork from 2008, filed by Jamie, claiming she had dementia, which would give him even more power over the pop star under California code, including \u201c[the ability] to make most medical decisions without the court\u2019s permission.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>All of the pop princess\u2019 expenses, including <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a>s to Starbucks and iTunes purchases, according to the New York Times, are turned over to the court.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_does_this_have_fans_worried\"><\/span>Why does this have fans worried?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16055553\"><img alt=\"Britney Spears on stage during the 2016 Billboard Music Awards.\" data- data- height=\"441\" width=\"631\"><\/img><figcaption><span>Britney Spears onstage during the 2016 Billboard Music Awards.<\/span><span>WireImage<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In December 2008, Britney released the \u201cCircus\u201d album, which debuted at No. 1 in the US and became one of the fastest-selling records of the year. It also kicked off her comeback. More albums, world tours, awards and a stint as a judge on \u201cX Factor\u201d followed. In 2016, she announced her four-year residency at Planet Hollywood Resort &#038; Casino in Las Vegas called \u201cBritney: Piece of Me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fans have since wondered if the comeback was really her decision.<\/p>\n<p>But Britney took to Instagram to squash rumors over her agency in April 2019: \u201cMy situation is unique, but I promise I\u2019m doing what\u2019s best at this moment,\u201d she wrote in part under a video in which she assured fans, \u201cAll is well. My family has been going through a lot of stress and anxiety lately so I just needed time to deal.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_FreeBritney\"><\/span>What is #FreeBritney?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Tess Barker and Barbara Gray, hosts of the \u201cBritney\u2019s Gram\u201d podcast where they dive deep into Britney\u2019s social media, are credited with launching the movement in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>But fans took a renowned interest in Britney\u2019s conservatorship last year, when the star announced an \u201cindefinite hiatus\u201d from her music career and residency. She was checked into a mental-health facility in March to cope with the stress of her father nearly dying of a ruptured colon. In the same month, Wallet resigned as co-conservator, asking the court to quickly approve his resignation, saying \u201csubstantial detriment, irreparable harm and immediate danger will result to the conservatee\u201d if the resignation was not approved, due to \u201congoing business activities requiring immediate attention.\u201d He hasn\u2019t responded to The Post\u2019s request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>A court hearing in May of last year, where Britney made a rare appearance, led to an investigation of the conservatorship, fanning the flames of #FreeBritney. A subsequent restraining order was placed on Jamie Spears by Federline, barring him from seeing Sean and Jayden after a blowout fight between the boys and their grandfather, in which Jamie allegedly knocked down a door.<\/p>\n<p>The campaign gained even more steam when a former photographer for Britney, Andrew Gallery, read a letter that he claimed was given to him by Britney over a decade ago when the conservatorship was set up. Written in the third person, it claimed she was \u201ccontrolled.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Followers use the hashtag #FreeBritney to follow the ongoing case and trade rumors and conspiracies surrounding the star. A few of the unproven theories: that she\u2019s not allowed to drive or use the internet \u2014 including Instagram \u2014 without permission from her father, that her naturally deep voice has been altered to sound higher and more pop-like to sell more records for her entire career, and that she\u2019s being held against her will in an undisclosed location.<\/p>\n<p>Britney\u2019s song choice, wardrobe and captions are all dissected by the movement for subliminal messaging. Even the emojis she uses in her social-media posts or a subtle marking on her hat are examined with a Talmudic level of scrutiny by the #FreeBritney-ers. They showed up in real life, too, protesting outside West Hollywood City Hall to \u201cfree\u201d the celeb during one of her many recent court hearings, which are closed to the public.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Does_anyone_profit_from_Britney_being_under_conservatorship\"><\/span>Does anyone profit from Britney being under conservatorship?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Britney\u2019s leaked financial docs from 2018 reveal that conservator and legal fees set the star back an eye-watering $1.1 million that year, with $128,000 going to her father as his court-approved fee.<\/p>\n<p>Court documents from November 2018 reveal that then-conservator Wallet was requesting a raise to the tune of $426,000 per year for tending to the crooner.<\/p>\n<p>Wallet had claimed that he deserved the bump for helping clean up Britney\u2019s estate which he says was \u201ctotal chaos with tremendous liabilities,\u201d and for keeping the star performing by making sure she wasn\u2019t being given drugs during her career comeback.<\/p>\n<p>Her exploding bank account from the years of steady work also prompted Federline to petition to triple his monthly child support from Spears back in 2018.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16055630\"><img alt=\"2001 Britney\" data- data- height=\"441\" width=\"662\"><\/img><figcaption><span>2001 Britney<\/span><span>WireImage<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Has_the_Spears_family_weighed_in\"><\/span>Has the Spears family weighed in?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Britney\u2019s siblings have entered the #FreeBritney fray in the past week.<\/p>\n<p>Jamie Lynn Spears, the star\u2019s younger sister vaguely called for the public to \u201crespect the situation with privacy for the person, and the family trying to protect their loved ones.\u201d A fan called out the star in an Instagram post writing, \u201cHow about your sister\u2019s OBVIOUS mental illness? Why don\u2019t you speak on that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have no right to assume anything about my sister, and I have NO right to speak about HER health and personal matters,\u201d Jamie Lynn shot back. \u201cShe is a strong, badass, unstoppable woman, and that\u2019s the only thing that is OBVIOUS.\u201d She later wrote \u201cI\u2019d rather take all the hate than speak about someone else\u2019s personal matter, that they want to be kept private.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Britney\u2019s brother, Bryan, said in a podcast interview the next day, \u201c[Britney\u2019s] always wanted to get out of [the conservatorship],\u201d but defended the arrangement saying, \u201cit\u2019s been a great thing for our family, to this point.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not so fast.<\/p>\n<p>On March 4, Jayden, now 13, took to Instagram Live and described his grandfather as a \u201cpretty big d\u2009-\u2009ck\u201d but heaped praise on his dad, Kevin. \u201cI have the best dad,\u201d he said, adding that he was \u201clike Jesus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And, in June 2019, Lynne Spears, Britney\u2019s mother, was clocked \u201cliking\u201d various pro-#FreeBritney posts.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A-listers_come_to_her_defense\"><\/span>A-listers come to her defense<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>#FreeBritney isn\u2019t just made up of internet obsessives. Other A-list activists have also taken up the singer\u2019s mantle, including Paris Hilton, Rose McGowan, Miley Cyrus, Mario Lopez, Lindsay Lohan and Courtney Love.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dStay strong @britneyspears We love you,\u201d wrote \u201cReal Housewife\u201d Leah McSweeney on Instagram adding #freebritney.
