suspects<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Facebook, now known as Meta, warned the LAPD that its reported practice of setting up fake accounts to surveil users and collect their data on its platforms violates the company\u2019s terms and policies.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/LAPD-Letter.pdf\">cease and desist letter<\/a> to police chief Michel Moore last week, lawyers demanded that the department stop creating \u201cfake (or dummy) Facebook accounts\u201d to \u201cimpersonate legitimate users.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The missive came after internal <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.brennancenter.org\/our-work\/analysis-opinion\/lapd-documents-reveal-use-social-media-monitoring-tools\">documents obtained by New York University\u2019s Brennan Center for Justice<\/a> in September showed the LAPD encouraged cops to collect social media account information from suspects and create a \u201cFictitious Online Persona\u201d to spy on them. <\/p>\n<p>The department also partnered with a third-party network that analyzes social media information to unlock connections between users, according to the documents.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image \u201cFirst Amendment protected activities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur authenticity policies are intended to create a safe environment where people can trust and hold one another accountable,\u201d Meta Vice President and Deputy General Counsel Roy Austin Jr wrote. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cOperating fake accounts violates the terms and policies that govern the Facebook service, and undermines trust in our division said he was \u201cnot aware\u201d of the letter Thursday evening.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not the first time Facebook has warned police departments not to impersonate users or make phony accounts.
