{"id":369607,"date":"2021-11-19T22:15:00","date_gmt":"2021-11-19T19:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/is-us-politics-divisive-enough-to-make-crypto-a-partisan-issue\/"},"modified":"2021-11-19T22:15:00","modified_gmt":"2021-11-19T19:15:00","slug":"is-us-politics-divisive-enough-to-make-crypto-a-partisan-issue","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/is-us-politics-divisive-enough-to-make-crypto-a-partisan-issue\/","title":{"rendered":"# Is US politics divisive enough to make crypto a partisan issue?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong># Is US politics divisive enough to make crypto a partisan issue?  <\/strong>&#8221;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.cointelegraph.com\/images\/840_aHR0cHM6Ly9zMy5jb2ludGVsZWdyYXBoLmNvbS91cGxvYWRzLzIwMjEtMTEvNzE2MjRmNmYtNWYzNC00MDc4LTkzNWMtODMwNTQzNzM3OTM2LmpwZw==.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"post-content\" data-v-128018ef>As the perceived legitimacy of blockchain <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> increases, politicians in the United States have shown a growing interest in turning this non-partisan technology into a topic of political divisiveness.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking via video to an audience of the Bloomberg New Economy Forum in Singapore on Friday, former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-11-19\/cryptocurrencies-can-destabilize-nations-hillary-clinton-warns\">said<\/a> while cryptocurrencies were an \u201cinteresting\u201d technology, they also had the power to undermine the U.S. dollar and destabilize nations \u2014 \u201cperhaps starting with small ones but going much larger.\u201d While no longer the leader of the Democratic Party, Clinton\u2019s sentiment on crypto resembles that of top Democrat and senator Elizabeth Warren, who has often criticized the crypto market during committee hearings. <\/p>\n<p>Clinton\u2019s comments came while discussing Russian President Vladimir Putin, whom she accused of being behind a disinformation and cyberwarfare campaign \u2014 seemingly also referring to ransomware attacks and some of the crypto payments associated with them. While the former presidential candidate\u2019s intentions are unknown, a prominent Democratic voice like Clinton\u2019s further connecting Russia to a seemingly apolitical financial tool like crypto may have the potential to do damage among U.S. lawmakers trying to enact policy on both sides of the aisle.<\/p>\n<p>Party politics in the United States are, at times, comically divisive. For example, many Republican voters destroyed their own property \u2014 Nike shoes and Keurig brewing machines, to name a few \u2014 after lawmakers spoke out against former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick taking a knee during the U.S. national anthem. The entire discussion surrounding masks and vaccines in the U.S. is often framed not as a scientific matter, but one of \u201cfreedom,\u201d largely stoked by <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social media<\/a> posts and statements from conservative mouthpieces.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Former President Bill Clinton spoke at Ripple\u2019s Swell conference in 2018, saying that the &#8220;permutations and possibilities&#8221; of blockchain were &#8220;staggeringly great,&#8221; but he had been out of office for roughly 17 years when he made those statements. When a more current Democratic figure like Hillary Clinton speaks out against crypto, could it affect how the issue is handled by lawmakers in office now?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Related: <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>Is Ethereum left and Bitcoin right?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On Monday, President Joe Biden signed a $1 trillion infrastructure bill into law\u00a0that also implemented tighter rules on businesses handling cryptocurrencies and expanded the reporting requirements for brokers to include digital assets. While passing the bill through both chambers of Congress was accomplished mostly along party lines \u2014 69\u201330 votes in the Senate, 228\u2013206 in the House \u2014 the language on crypto was seemingly more of a bipartisan issue.<\/p>\n<p>Cynthia Lummis is a Republican senator who has largely voted with her party on controversial issues, including against a commission to investigate the Jan. 6 attack at the U.S. Capitol and not to impeach the former president \u2014 yet, even she is crossing the divide when it comes to crypto. Lummis voted against the infrastructure bill in the Senate and is currently <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenLummis\/status\/1461447381707284485\">working<\/a> with Democratic Senator Ron Wyden to pass new legislation changing the law\u2019s tax reporting requirements so that they will not <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ly to certain individuals.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We need cross-party agreement on the future of finance, not narrow partisanship.
