However, tech could\u00a0plug the gap. Artificial Intelligence (AI) could provide the companionship people strive for. But what if your AI pal dies?<\/p>\n<p>Is it better to have befriended and lost a bit of code with a 3D avatar than never to have booted the thing up in the first place? Is it wise to pour your heart into something produced by companies that have been harvesting as much data about us as possible over the last few decades? Are we even going to get to the point where a conversation with AI doesn\u2019t feel like navigating a text-based RPG from 1992?<\/p>\n<div class=\"future_hybrid_paragraph\"><\/div>\n<p>There are a few ways AI could \u201cdie,\u201d but possibly its most major weakness comes in the form of the thing that will probably make it affordable and practical in the first place\u2014the Cloud.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Where_Are_We_Now\"><\/span>Where Are We Now<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<figure style=\"width: 1920px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.reviewgeek.com\/p\/uploads\/2021\/11\/23d22656.jpg\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Digital Dream Labs<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>AI is already everywhere, and the chances are you interact with some form of AI or other several times a day. This could be in the form of a voice assistant on your phone, a helpline\u2019s robotic answering machine, or a home assistant controlling your lights and thermostat. Beyond making life easier, AI has also provided companionship to the curious and the lonely\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/ELIZA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">for almost 60 years<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, there are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=ai+chat+bots+&amp;sxsrf=AOaemvJZ06N7DoZjp770R9QpD17MyqBxOw%3A1636544464784&amp;ei=0K-LYcmkL4y0sAfjpKzIAg&amp;oq=ai+chat+bots+&amp;gs_lcp=Cgdnd3Mtd2l6EAMyBAgjECcyBAgAEAoyBAgAEAoyBAgAEAoyBAgAEAoyBAgAEAoyBAgAEAoyBAgAEAoyBAgAEAoyBAgAEAo6BwgjELADECc6BwgAEEcQsAM6CAgAEBYQChAeOggIABAIEA0QHkoECEEYAFDHC1iSFWC7F2gBcAJ4AIABgAGIAZ4IkgEDNC42mAEAoAEByAEJwAEB&amp;sclient=gws-wiz&amp;ved=0ahUKEwjJzO2b2430AhUMGuwKHWMSCykQ4dUDCA4&amp;uact=5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">plenty of AI chatbots<\/a>\u00a0you can hold a conversation with. Alexa, Google, and Siri all have some level of chit-chat built in.\u00a0Specialist chatbots are also available for more in-depth long-term discussions.<\/p>\n<p>Replika, one of the more advanced bots, currently has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/careers\/2020\/may\/07\/ai-and-me-friendship-chatbots-are-on-the-rise-but-is-there-a-gendered-design-flaw#:~:text=Replika%2C%20which%20has%207%20million,related%20issues%20to%20the%20fore.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">over 7 million users<\/a>\u00a0and experienced a 35% increase in use during the pandemic. There, you can customize the name, personality, appearance, and gender of your AI companion. Clothing items and new personality traits can be purchased, while new relationship options such as \u201cromantic partner\u201d and \u201cmentor\u201d can be unlocked via a sub<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">script<\/a>ion model.<\/p>\n<p>The more you chat with Replika, the more your relationship builds. The company uses an experience point system for this in an attempt to replicate how friendships develop in real life. There is a feedback system implemented, too, which looks similar to how you can like Facebook posts or iMessages\u2014so you can help the bot learn without destroying immersion.<\/p>\n<p>Equally, there\u2019s friendly AI that inhabits the physical world, too. Social companion robots\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medicalfuturist.com\/the-top-12-social-companion-robots\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">have existed for a while<\/a>\u00a0and may soon become mainstream. Amazon recently had what is most politely described as an \u201cattempt\u201d at breaking into the world of robotic assistants\u2014and Elon Musk\u00a0made some promises\u00a0regarding what is essentially a robot butler.<\/p>\n<div class=\"future_hybrid_paragraph\"><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/elliq.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ElliQ<\/a>\u00a0is an example of an AI companion with a physical unit done well. It is designed to provide companionship, as well as some medical services, to the elderly. Unlike Alexa, ElliQ can prompt conversations and build a rapport with its user.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2021\/aug\/13\/elliq-robot-companion-seniors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">One 93-year-old user<\/a>\u00a0refers to ElliQ as a \u201cfriend,\u201d sees the device as female, and regularly thanks it for performing tasks.<\/p>\n<p>One fascinating fact about ElliQ is the demographic. It\u2019s not the usual early adoptors you might see requesting an invitation to buy an early access Amazon Astro. It\u2019s a group of people that tend to struggle with <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a>. ElliQ provides access to things like weather reports, music streaming, and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a>s\u2014while also providing companionship to an isolated group of people. It\u2019s that mix of practicality and friendship that can create a bond.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Can_You_Care_About_AI\"><\/span>Can You Care About AI?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<figure style=\"width: 1920px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.reviewgeek.com\/p\/uploads\/2021\/09\/83197ac4.png\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Amazon<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Interaction and companionship are vital for both our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/aging\/publications\/features\/lonely-older-adults.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">physical and emotional<\/a>\u00a0well-being. Although it is easier than ever to communicate with actual humans from around the globe, there is a gap to be filled. People have grown attached to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/ad\/18080060\/psychology-of-binge-watching-tv-movies#:~:text=When%20we%20watch%20a%20TV,taking%2C%20and%20the%20proximity%20effect.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fictional characters<\/a>\u00a0they can\u2019t even interact with, so developing some emotional bond with some charming code isn\u2019t as absurd as it sounds.<\/p>\n<p>The possibilities go beyond simple companionship. People have gone as far as \u201cmarrying\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-japan-videogame-idUSTRE5BJ1XX20091220\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a video game character<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2018\/12\/28\/health\/rise-of-digisexuals-intl\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a hologram<\/a>, and even\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2014\/05\/08\/porn-addict-tried-to-legally-marry-his-computer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a laptop<\/a>. Despite initially appearing to be outliers filling the odder sections of <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a>papers, experts predict that the number of \u201cdigisexuals\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/sciencetech\/article-5120627\/Digisexuals-prefer-sex-robots-set-rise.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">will increase<\/a>\u00a0as technology improves. So, someone you know may be tying the knot with a bit of code sometime soon.<\/p>\n<div class=\"future_hybrid_paragraph\"><\/div>\n<p>Friendship isn\u2019t much of a stretch if marriage is on the table at the one end of the scale. Although it will play a game with you when you\u2019re bored, Alexa isn\u2019t an out-and-out companion. It\u2019s more functional than friendly\u2014you\u2019ll find organizational skills and device management amongst\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.amazon.dee.app&amp;hl=en_GB&amp;gl=US&amp;tag=reviewgeek-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Alexa app\u2019s features<\/a>, but not the ability to tell you a joke when you\u2019re down. Still, people allegedly miss Amazon\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/alexa\/comments\/cessn0\/i_am_on_vacation_and_for_some_reason_miss_alexa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">voice assistant<\/a>\u00a0when they go on vacation.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of accessibility, theoretically, anyone with an internet connection could have an AI companion. Your emotional connection requiring an internet connection could also be the thing that makes it all end in tears.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"So_Whats_the_Problem\"><\/span>So, What\u2019s the Problem?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<figure style=\"width: 1920px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.reviewgeek.com\/p\/uploads\/2021\/11\/ef542015.jpg\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shutterstock.com\/image-photo\/moscow-russia-april-27-2018socibot-robot-1555456979\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Olga Bugro \/ Shutterstock.com<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The problem is, your AI companion can die. Not in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Death\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the literal sense<\/a>. But AI companions can cease to exist.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitaldreamlabs.com\/collections\/vector-products\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vector<\/a>, basically a robot pet that lived in your house, technically died after its creator, Anki, blasted through over $200 million in crowdfunding and venture capital before going pop. Similarly,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jibo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jibo<\/a>\u00a0\u2014a \u201csmart robot\u201d that received over $3.6 million in crowdfunding cash\u2014was put down in 2019.<\/p>\n<div class=\"future_hybrid_paragraph\"><\/div>\n<p>Jibo and Vector may provide hope when things look bleak for AI Compadres. People who had already purchased the robots still had access to them afterward, though with no promise of updates or support. Then, after a patent acquisition,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jibo.com\/release\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jibo seemed to get a new lease of life<\/a>, expanding into the healthcare and medical fields.<\/p>\n<p>When humans die, some people believe their spirit will go up towards the clouds. Conversely, if an AI\u2019s \u201cspirit\u201d stops being in the Cloud, there could be some significant issues.<\/p>\n<p>There are benefits to objects running through the Cloud\u2014if there wasn\u2019t a significant upside, the thing would not exist or at least wouldn\u2019t be common. The Cloud can save companies and consumers money, give access to the necessary computing power an AI needs to run, and allow seamless updating.<\/p>\n<p>The big downside is, manufacturers store little data on the machine that relies on the Cloud. So once that connection to the cloud breaks, for whatever reason, the object relying on it is at best operating at minimal capacity or, at worst, dead.<\/p>\n<div class=\"future_hybrid_paragraph\"><\/div>\n<p>Vector became essentially useless when Cloud access stopped. Anki needed to maintain that access both financially and in terms of support.\u00a0Vector was eventually\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2020\/1\/5\/21050378\/anki-vector-saved-shutdown-servers-assets-bought\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pulled back from the abyss<\/a>\u00a0with the company that acquired Anki promising to remove the need to connect to the Cloud and give users the means to develop features. A chain is only as strong as its weakest link, and any \u201cproduct that relies on the Cloud will have issues every time\u00a0it fails.<\/p>\n<p>As we saw with Vector, a company going out of business may also mean support for their products goes with them. So if you have an AI companion that relies on the cloud to function, it may not be long for this world. And although another company revived Vector, there\u2019s no guarantee your AI-driven friend will be another digital Lazarus.<\/p>\n<p>Because the cloud can provide additional storage and computing power, there are no guarantees that a machine\u2019s functionality will fit in and function on the device alone.<\/p>\n<div class=\"future_hybrid_paragraph\"><\/div>\n<p>If something as simple and common as Wi-Fi issues can send an AI companion into a coma, that could have severe implications for people reliant on said companion. Ninety percent of tech start-ups fail\u2014so if the lifespan of a robot is directly tied to the lifespan of the company that built it, many AI projects may not be long for this world.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>So yes, you probably can get attached to a piece of software, and that piece of software may disappear one day, leaving you with nothing but some memories and a bunch of grief. Is it worth getting involved with a chatbot knowing it could just disappear one day? That\u2019s a personal choice.
