The deals vary in their terms: BJ\u2019s<br \/>\n        BJ,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/203668982\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-3.23%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       the wholesale club, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bjs.com\/search?visualVariant.nonvisualVariant.gbi_attributes.Free_turkey_promo_2021=Butterball%20Free%20Turkey&amp;Source=CLP_Thanksgiving\" class=\"icon none\">requires a $100 purchase<\/a>, while ShopRite, the supermarket chain, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/shop.shoprite.com\/globaldata\/banner-pages\/turkey-promotion\" class=\"icon none\">sets the bar at $400<\/a>, but also lets shoppers substitute a ham or other items for the turkey.<\/p>\n<p>Some retail and marketing experts say the promotions have reached a fever pitch this year because turkey prices have soared, climbing to their highest point in decades, with a 15-pound bird running around $21. In other words, food retailers know that a free turkey is a more powerful tool than ever to lure shoppers.<\/p>\n<div data-layout=\"inline\n                \" data-layout-mobile=\"\" class=\"\n          media-object\n          type-InsetPullQuote\n            inline\n    scope-web|mobileapps\n  article__inset\n          article__inset--type-InsetPullQuote\n            article__inset--inline\n  \"><\/p>\n<div class=\"wsj-article-pullquote article__inset__pullquote \">\n<p class=\"pullquote-content article__inset__pullquote__quote\">\n        <span class=\"l-qt article__inset__pullquote__mark--left\">\u201c<\/span>The idea is, \u2018If I can get you to come to my store, I\u2019m probably going to keep you through Super Bowl Sunday.\u2019<span class=\"r-qt article__inset__pullquote__mark--right\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>        <small><br \/>\n          <span class=\"inset-author article__inset__pullquote__author\">\u2014 Phil Lempert, editor of SupermarketGuru.com<\/span><br \/>\n        <\/small><\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>       For that matter, it\u2019s not just supermarkets playing the free-turkey <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a>. Even cellphone companies are getting into the act. Boost Mobile, which is owned by Dish<br \/>\n        DISH,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/207505872\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-2.13%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       has <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/about.dish.com\/2020-07-01-DISH-enters-retail-wireless-market-with-close-of-Boost-Mobile-advances-build-of-the-nations-first-standalone-5G-network\" class=\"icon none\">offered a turkey giveaway<\/a> in select cities in recent years. Jeff DeGiorgio, a retiree who lives in Logan, Utah, got so excited about the offer at one local store \u2014 which required a $100 purchase \u2014 that he said he split a $260 grocery bill with a household member so that he could score two birds. Plus, he got a turkey at a reduced price through another supermarket offer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love turkey sandwiches,\u201d said DeGiorgio, though he added he does plan to give one of his three birds away to a needy family.<\/p>\n<p>Still, for all the fervor, some who know the shopping scene say it\u2019s worth remembering there\u2019s no such thing as a free lunch \u2014 or a free turkey.<\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-membership-tile\"><\/div>\n<p>They note that retailers use the free-turkey promotions as loss leaders \u2014 meaning they hope that consumers who enter their stores will buy enough items at regular price (or even higher) to compensate for the giveaway. Or that they will return to shop again through the holidays and beyond based on the good feelings generated by the freebie.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe idea is, \u2018If I can get you to come to my store, I\u2019m probably going to keep you through Super Bowl Sunday,\u2019\u201d said Phil Lempert, editor of SupermarketGuru.com, a website that covers the grocery business.<\/p>\n<p>Another strategy, said Craig Agranoff, a Florida-based marketing professional: Stores will often strategically place high-margin items near the turkeys. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of psychology that goes into marketing\u201d these kind of offers, he said.<\/p>\n<p>All of this means that shoppers should be on special alert when they come in to claim their free birds, consumer experts advise. In other words, don\u2019t buy something that\u2019s overpriced or that you don\u2019t need just because that\u2019s what it takes to reach the dollar figure you need to hit to bag that bird.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, some shoppers say they\u2019re tired of playing the free-turkey game, and are not bothering to score a bird this year. Count Maria Glass, a retiree who lives in upstate New York, among them.<\/p>\n<p>Glass said she\u2019s done with getting \u201ccrazed over the freeness\u201d and \u201cspending extra money on junk\u201d to earn a turkey.
