Black Adam producer Hiram Garcia has revealed why the character was given a solo movie and did not feature in 2019’s Shazam! as was planned.<\/p>\n

\n We all know that there is an almost bottomless well of superheroes out there for both Marvel and DC to choose from when deciding who to bring into their respective universes next, but while there are some that could quite easily share screen time in one movie, ultimately the producers have to decide whether they are seen in a crossover movie or branch out on their own merit. One such decision was taken by DC to bring Shazam!<\/em> and Black Adam<\/em> to cinemas in solo movies<\/a>, and it seems to have worked out well for everyone, but it could have been a lot different, as producer Hiram Garcia revealed.\n <\/p>\n

\n Originally, Johnson’s Black Adam was written as the villain in the 2019 Shazam!<\/em> movie, but partway through development the decision was taken to give the character his own movie and now we are in the home straight before we get to see The Rock’s epic hero “shake up the hierarchy of the DCEU” – according to his own publicity for the movie anyway. Speaking to Screen Rant in an interview, Garcia explained how the potential for Black Adam was too much to ignore and having two huge characters in one movie would not give either of them the space to develop fully.\n <\/p>\n

\n When asked what it was like to finally get to the point of Black Adam<\/em> almost being ready, after being in development since 2014, Garcia said, “Yeah. I remember, it’s so funny. I always like to keep my finger on the pulse. And so many fans are always like, “This movie’s never happ<\/a>ening. He’s been talking about it forever.” But from the moment he walked on set in that costume to finally be there after so many years of development. And the reason for that was it’s not a simple character to crack and it’s not an easy movie to tell. And we went through so many iterations. But I think once we realized we wanted to separate Black Adam and Shazam where we were trying to introduce both of them in the same movie and obviously realizing not only are both characters totally so different I think in the kind of story you want to tell around them, but they’re just both require so much space in terms of wanting to really introduce them to the world.”\n <\/p>\n

\n He continued, “And once we were able to separate them, things really started to pick up. So the years of development paid off and to get the team we have now. And again, that first moment he walked on set as Black Adam was one of those things I’ll always forget. And for him too, and I just, I know him so well and to see how fired up he was to just be in that costume. And our director made the coolest camera test where there’s this incredible music playing. The whole set felt it when this happened, it was a real moment. So we’re thrilled. We’re grinding away on it. I’m excited for you to see it. I think you’re going to have a lot fun with it, and he’s a very different character that we haven’t really seen in the DC world yet. So it’s exciting.”\n <\/p>\n

\n What makes the decision to introduce Black Adam in a solo movie even more impressive is that much better known characters such as Wonder Woman didn’t get their own movie until after they appeared in other team-ups, so there is a lot riding on the reception Black Adam<\/em> gets when it arrives in cinemas next year. However, with Johnson on a mission to make sure that everyone goes to see the movie, it would be a brave soul who would deny his invitation.
