Johannes Roberts originally had a nod to one major Resident Evil villain in Welcome to Raccoon City, but it wound up on the cutting room floor.<\/p>\n

\n A very familiar villain nearly made it into Resident Evil: Welcome to Racoon City<\/em>, or at least an app<\/a>arent reference to that antagonist, but it won\u2019t be seen on the big screen. Set to premiere exclusively in theaters, the new Resident Evil<\/em> movie comes from writer and director Johannes Roberts. It features very little resemblance to the previous movies<\/a> in the series with the intention of following the video game<\/a> source material much more closely.\n <\/p>\n

\n We have seen from the trailers that there will be a lot of material from the Resident Evil<\/em> and Resident Evil 2 <\/em>video games that inspired elements of Welcome to Raccoon City<\/em>. The characters will have lickers and perhaps other creatures to worry about in addition to hungry zombies as they traverse through the Spencer Mansion, the Raccoon City Police Department station, and other familiar locations. Roberts even used blueprints from Capcom to make these sets as accurate as possible.\n <\/p>\n

\n However, the freaky stalker known as Mr. X is not going to be a part of the fun. Gamers will know Mr. X as a version of the Tyrant that\u2019s unleashed by Umbrella in Raccoon City where he pursues Leon and Claire. The powerful foe, recognizable by his large size, trenchcoat, and hat, is such a memorable part of Resident Evil 2<\/em>, and Roberts wanted to include him in his new reboot. As he recently said on the ComicBook Nation podcast, a scene alluding to Mr. X had to be axed from the final cut as it didn\u2019t fit with the movie.\n <\/p>\n

“The one thing that I wanted to put in and I didn’t, I just couldn’t find a way to put in was Mr. X. There is a nod. It’s tricky to see in the shot and I was like, ‘Just use that shot,’ but it doesn’t work in the movie. And I was like, ‘Okay,’ with a movie you have to actually tell a proper movie rather than just use the shots that you want.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

All of the main characters can also be recognized as names from the original games. The ensemble cast includes Kaya Scodelario as Claire Redfield, Hannah John-Kamen as Jill Valentine, Robbie Amell as Chris Redfield, Tom Hopper as Albert Wesker, Avan Jogia as Leon S. Kennedy, Donal Logue as Chief Brian Irons, Neal McDonough as William Birkin, and Lily Gao as Ada Wong. Should there be a sequel, Johannes Roberts has teased that it will include elements from Resident Evil 4<\/em>, so who knows if there will be any room for Mr. X to show up in the potential follow-up movie?\n <\/p>\n

\n An official synopsis for Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City<\/em>, per Sony, reads: \u201cOnce the booming home of pharmaceutical giant Umbrella Corporation, Raccoon City is now a dying Midwestern town. The company\u2019s exodus left the city a wasteland\u2026with great evil brewing below the surface. When that evil is unleashed, a group of survivors must work together to uncover the truth behind Umbrella and make it through the night.\u201d\n <\/p>\n
