{"id":370567,"date":"2021-11-22T03:02:40","date_gmt":"2021-11-22T00:02:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/blade-runner-black-lotus-anime-interview\/"},"modified":"2021-11-22T03:02:40","modified_gmt":"2021-11-22T00:02:40","slug":"blade-runner-black-lotus-anime-interview","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/blade-runner-black-lotus-anime-interview\/","title":{"rendered":"#Blade Runner: Black Lotus Anime Interview"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Blade Runner: Black Lotus <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/anime-manga\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"6\" title=\"Anime || Manga\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Anime<\/a> Interview<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blade Runner: Black Lotus<\/span><\/i> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is now out on Crunchyroll and Adult Swim and it sets the stage as the sequel to the one-off anime episode <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blade Runner Black Out 2022. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We had the opportunity to talk to executive producer Joseph Chou, co-directors Kenji Kamiyama and Shinji Aramaki, and the English cast members Jessica Henwick (Elle),\u00a0 Will Yun Lee (Joseph),\u00a0 and Stephen Root (Earl Grant).\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 12pt;\">Crunchyroll describes the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> as:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Los Angeles 2032. A young woman wakes up with no memories and possessing deadly skills. The only clues to her mystery are a locked data device and a tattoo of a black lotus. Putting together the pieces, she must hunt down the people responsible for her brutal and bloody past to find the truth of her lost identity.<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><b>Executive Producer Joseph Chou, co-directors Kenji Kamiyama and Shinji Aramaki<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While watching the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Behind the Scenes <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">video, you mentioned about the anime\u2019s \u201clook\u201d in creating the CGI world. What did you mean by that and how did you decide on the look, especially with your work on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ghost in the Shell<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the fact that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ghost in the Shell <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was inspired by the original <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blade Runner<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><b>Joseph Chou:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> We wanted to make sure the anime was recognizable to the Blade Runner franchise in the CGI format. We struggled between using just fine-tuning or\u00a0 Photoreal, but neither was a good choice. We had to play a h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>y medium, keep it unique, but also keep it familiar to the world itself.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><b>Kenji Kamiyama: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also,<\/span> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blade Runner<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> wasn\u2019t a super clean sci-fi back then (with the neon lights, rainy streets, and lots of strange Japanese signs), so the setting was super unique to Japanese audiences. The look of Los Angeles is a major \u201ccharacter\u201d in the original<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Blade Runner<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so it\u2019s one of the things we had to tackle. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ghost in the Shell<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was indeed inspired from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blade Runner<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but I did <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ghost in the Shell <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first before the Blade Runner short films and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black Lotus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The question of identity and of human memory covered in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ghost in the Shell <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is inspired from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blade Runner<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but I had to present it in a different angle for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black Lotus.<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><b>Shinji Aramaki: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What was also\u00a0 important was if we were going to present a new concept in a long story\/series, all of the story concepts had to be accepted by Blade Runner fans or be considered \u201cBlade Runner-esque\u201d and fit in the canon. It was a balance I struggled with. Unlike in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ghost in the Shell <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that was from the cyberpunk genre, I came in just for the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black Lotus <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CGI series and at that point, the story had taken\u00a0 itself in a different direction even with the questions of existence\/human memory. So for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black Lotus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it\u2019s more of doing justice for the franchise that was the bigger challenge.\u00a0<\/span><b\/><b\/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>With the cyberpunk concepts and <i>Blade Runner\u2019s <\/i>themes, how do you think the <i>Black Lotus <\/i>will speak on the global historical themes of cyberpunk, global corporations, capitalism, etc.?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><b>Chou: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0it\u2019s surreal coming from a movie from the \u201880s where there are relevant themes of a class struggle, racial issues\u00a0 (i.e. replicants vs humans), and corporations taking over the society. There\u2019s a lot of issues we can cover in this property and it\u2019s something we\u2019re planning for this series, while not losing our focus on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black Lotus <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as entertainment. All of these themes were present in our mind while creating <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black Lotus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><b>Kamiyama<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: For me, the most poignant was the giant corporation using <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> to control society and that brought the question \u201cwhat is the meaning of human life?\u201d And it\u2019s a natural question, especially with Wallace Corp. trying to control labor, economic production, etc. It\u2019s not so much intentional, the themes just so happened to seep out in the production. That question really made me think about that while making the TV series.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><b>Aramaki:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The point is to deliver entertainment and catharsis for the characters. But because the characte in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black Lotus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a female replicant, it can be understood as a gender or discrimination issue that she has to struggle with. It\u2019s the first time the franchise has a female protagonist in trying to create a piece of entertainment, so these themes naturally come out, especially with how we decided to have the protagonist drive the series and place her in this universe. She has to overcome these challenges, and that becomes reflected in our world today too.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong><i>Blade Runner <\/i>is a cerebral sci-fi story. When you\u2019re expanding it into CGI and an action format, does it present any challenges in presenting the story of <i>Black Lotus<\/i>?\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><b>Kamiyama: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since this is a series, it\u2019s a very different format to the movies. You have to tell the story over many episodes. You have to deliver something entertaining to keep people going. But because <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blade Runner <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is not an action-drama, you have to deliver enough suspense and a visceral feel to it, so people want to keep watching. It\u2019s a different type of storytelling because while movies use a \u201cpersonal journey\u201droute\u00a0 for the protagonis, it\u2019s not something you can\u2019t do in a series where you have multiple characters. In series, you have to bring different factors like the structure of the conflict to bring more intrigue.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><b>Aramaki:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Blade Runner is a wonderful franchise\/universe. But what is the point of the series done in a CGI? I first thought it was to expand and deliver the essence of the franchise, but now, it\u2019s possible that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black Lotus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> serves as an entry point.\u00a0 In order to do that, action might be something new to contribute to the franchise.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><b>Voice Cast Q&amp;A:\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 12pt;\">Jessica Henwick, Stephen Root, Will Yun Lee<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #333333;\"><strong>For Henwick who voices the main character \u201cElle\u201d, can you tell us a bit about your character and the significance of being the first female lead in BR.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #333333;\"><b>Jessica Henwick:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Elle is a woman who wakes up with no memory of her past. The only connection is the black lotus tattoo on her. The story follows her trying to piece together her past and the people who follow her. I\u2019m such a big fan of the other movies, and this is such a pop-culture moment in the landscape. It\u2019s an honor to bring a female protagonist to the franchise.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 12pt; color: #333333;\"><strong>For all the voice actors: were you able to see the Japanese dub of the show first to draw on the portrayal of the characters? Or did you pull from other inspirations? How did you envision your characters?\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #333333;\"><b>Jessica Henwick<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black Lotus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, I believe, was animated for Western audiences and then dubbed over in Japanese. Because of the scheduling, the Japanese actors would go before us, or vice-versa, and there\u2019s a bit of a scratch track.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #333333;\"><b>Stephen Root<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since this happened during COVID-19, you can\u2019t hear or experience everything. But the script is wonderful, and that\u2019s where I drew most of my character from.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #333333;\"><b>Will Yun Lee<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: I remember shooting the episode pre-COVID, and then shooting the whole episode again during COVID. It was an amazing production to bridge the gap between Japanese and American sensibilities, and the Blade Runner franchise itself,\u00a0 because the production team had one understanding of Blade Runner. Joseph can speak Korean, Japanese and English, so it was seamless in direction. Wes Gleason somehow understood what the Japanese wanted and could articulate it for the cast, and we relied a lot on him.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #333333;\"><strong>For Henwick &amp; Lee, <i>Blade Runner<\/i> had such a legacy. Having been part of cyberpunk-themed shows\/movies, what do you think about the world of Blade Runner that really draws so many people in?\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #333333;\"><b>Lee: <\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Altered Carbon<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> feels like it was formed from the basis of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blade Runner. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When I went on set for the first time, I felt like it was coming onto a set for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blade Runner<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with the mix of cultures, the steam coming off the ground, and the neon lights. This [the set of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Altered Carbon<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">] felt like Harrison Ford should be popping out at some point in the scene.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #333333;\"><b>Henwick<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0 I came to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Matrix Resurrections<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> much later, followed by <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black Lotus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But the everlasting appeal [of Blade Runner] is the tone. It sounds cool, and the writing is so meaningful and real. It really transcends time, and it\u2019s just cool!\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #333333;\"><strong>Since <i>Black Lotus<\/i> was recorded during COVID-19, what were the creative challenges to record during COVID-19?\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #333333;\"><b>Root:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It was finding a place to record, because not a lot of places were open to record. It wasn\u2019t optimum for me to record since I\u2019m old. I also love being in the studio with the producers. But it was odd and weird to spend most of your time in a mask, be natural and record, and then wear your mask again. I\u2019m really glad that there were enough studios that were open though. I\u2019m a sci-fi geek and I\u2019m grateful for Wes\u2019s help.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #333333;\"><b>Henwick<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Iit was hard to do it, but hands off to Aramaki &amp; Kamyama who got up at 3-4AM to hear me record in Germany where I was doing <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Matrix Resurrections<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. We were collaborating in 3 different time zones between Germany, Japan, and Los Angeles where Wes Gleason was.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #333333;\"><b>Lee:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I was fortunate to record most of my stuff pre-COVID.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 12pt; color: #333333;\"><strong>Each of your characters represent different parts of society. How did you approach the dynamic of your character?\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #333333;\"><b>Root:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Chief Grant plays a character that embodies prejudice in an attempt to wipe out a race. It\u2019s a pretty universal theme in these kinds of movies.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #333333;\"><b>Henwick:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Elle starts off as such a baby in this world and doesn\u2019t know the history. Not knowing all of the history didn\u2019t affect the performance, so I just tried to capture the naivety and follow her arc until the end when she knows who she is and what she wants.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #333333;\"><b>Will:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Elle sparks everything in my character (a junkyard scrap guy who knows about replicants and salvaging pre-Black Out memories). He\u2019s trying to forget everything in the world, but the guilt and trauma comes back when Elle comes into the picture and builds his arc as a character. She was my muse.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #333333;\"><strong>What were you able to bring into your experience, like from <i>Blood of Zeus<\/i>, into this performance?\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #333333;\"><b>Henwick:<\/b> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blood of Zeus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was a good experience to reassure myself that I could work in animation and voice acting. I came into <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black Lotus <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with less self-awareness, because it\u2019s perfect for the character who has no self-awareness. In the end, I wasn\u2019t afraid of embarrassing myself. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #333333;\"><strong>We\u2019ve seen you, Root, take on the roles of many villians. What do you find so appealing to come back to these characters?\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #333333;\"><b>Root:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It\u2019s not appealing, but I\u2019ve been playing a lot of \u201cheavies\u201d lately because of the script and who you work with, and who you get to learn from. I don\u2019t want to play these people, but they happen to be in good scripts, and I feel honored to be in this one. For me, it\u2019s script-driven.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #333333;\"><strong>It was fun listening to Lee be on <i>Altered Carbon<\/i> and being a fan of <i>Blade Runner<\/i>, so I\u2019m curious how much the look for <i>Black Lotus<\/i> affects you.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #333333;\"><b>Henwick: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several times in recording, you should be following the sounds and act in the chasing picture, and I would stop making noises because I was so transfixed by the cinematography and world. I was blown away when I saw it.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #333333;\"><b>Lee:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 Once I saw what I looked like and the world we were living in, it felt like I was transported back to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Altered Carbon<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is transported back to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blade Runner<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Just being there, and being in a booth for this cinematic experience, it felt like I was on a movie set.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #333333;\"><b>Root:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Being able to see this incredible animation, you just become entranced with it and it becomes like any kind of acting job.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #333333;\"><strong>Did you learn anything through this process? Any new techniques, new ways of acting, or working with the translators that you\u2019ll take for future gigs?\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #333333;\"><b>Henwick:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It\u2019s such an unusual animation that I don\u2019t know if I can carry it to other jobs. With \u201cyounger anime\u201d, you have to make noises for everything, like cute little noises. But with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black Lotus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Gleeson kept saying \u201cless noise\u201d to bring more weight to the scene. I don\u2019t know how much that transfers to other animation.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #333333;\"><b>Lee:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 It\u2019s so cool to see where the anime felt \u201cseparate\u201d to indicate things for certain scenes, but the animation is a full movie experience now.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #333333;\"><b>Root:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It\u2019s very naturalistic, compared to the \u201880s and \u201890s stuff. It\u2019s a pleasure to be real in an animation world and be on camera. It feels more like naturalistic acting.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #333333;\"><strong>Fun challenge: both the Blade Runner movies are iconic. But which one do you prefer and why?\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #333333;\"><b>Henwick: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The original. I\u2019m a huge indie fan and it\u2019s the original that changed the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #333333;\"><b>Root:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It\u2019s like the Alien franchise with the original where it\u2019s sci-fi, icky, and realistic. I like to see all the brands that are no longer with us too!\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #333333;\"><b>Lee:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The original put a stamp into the cyberpunk theme. What a brave and weird thing to come up with, but now it exists in every cyberpunk content.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #333333;\"><b>Henwick:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> And I bet it was cool!
