\n It would have been perfect for any other summer.<\/p>\n

Michele and Anisa Iuliano planned to open a combination pasta and beer garden on the rooftop of their Financial District restaurant, Gnoccheria, in April.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was my husband\u2019s dream. And then COVID hit,\u201d Anisa told The Post.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were frustrated, we were scared,\u201d she said. The pandemic temporarily shut down their plans \u2014 and their seven restaurants in the city. \u201cWe were worried, how are we going to make the rooftop work?\u201d<\/p>\n

But this spring, while the couple was isolating in their New Jersey home, a targeted ad on social media<\/a> became a sign: \u201cThere was a push ad that popped up for a greenhouse,\u201d Anisa recalled. She realized they could use the $800 structures to safely distance customers.<\/p>\n

Her husband wasn\u2019t on board at first. After some quarreling, \u201cHe said, \u2018You know what, I think that it will work.\u2019 I said \u2018Too late, I already ordered five,\u2019\u201d Anisa said.<\/p>\n

In July, the pair finally opened up their rooftop, at 100 Broad St., and called it Ampia, meaning \u201clarge space\u201d in Italian. Five greenhouses seat two people each, while a sixth can hold as many as eight guests. Tables are already booked up three weeks in advance.<\/p>\n

The safety precautions didn\u2019t stop with the innovative enclosures. The Iulianos have almost every surface of Ampia coated with Purity Solution, an EPA-app<\/a>roved sanitizing spray that kills bacteria for three months. As you walk in, a face-scanner takes your temperature and reminds you to put a mask on. A sanitizing mat wipes the soles of customers\u2019 shoes for germs, and a strobe light cleans the air.<\/p>\n

Each table is outfitted with hand sanitizer and during a shift, staff \u201cteams\u201d \u2014 a server, a busser, a bartender \u2014 only work together, to reduce exposure.<\/p>\n

\u201cI went a little overboard, but I needed to,\u201d said Anisa. \u201cI need people to come here and enjoy the experience of being on our rooftop. I don\u2019t want them to think about safety.\u201d<\/p>\n

While she retooled the decor and dealt with safety, Michele was in the kitchen, devising a new menu. \u201cHe came up with this concept of seafood paninis. They\u2019re big in Italy but not in New York,\u201d Anisa explained.<\/p>\n

So far, the polipo \u2014 grilled octopus with pesto, tomato and burrata mozzarella cheese ($20) \u2014 is a big hit, as are classic offering such as scallops with pancetta and an artichoke puree ($18), Margherita pizza and, of course, gnocchi.<\/p>\n

Customer Kevin Pritchard and his wife recently dined on the Ampia roof, their first time eating out since February. \u201cI wanted our first dining experience out to be something really really unique to mark the occasion of, hopefully, things getting better,\u201d he told The Post.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was very surprising, very intimate,\u201d the Astoria resident said of the greenhouses. \u201cAnd the food was delicious.\u201d<\/p>\n
