\nBroadway<\/strong> icon\u00a0Stephen Sondheim<\/strong> has died.<\/p>\n

According to media<\/a> reports published on Friday, the acclaimed longtime lyricist, composer, and musical theater legend passed away peacefully at his Connecticut home on Friday, after celebrating Thanksgiving with friends just one day earlier.<\/p>\n

The musical theater legend and longtime impacter of everything Broadway-related was 91 years old at the time of his death.<\/p>\n

His lawyer,\u00a0F. Richard Papp<\/a>as<\/strong>, first confirmed Sondheim\u2019s sad passing to the\u00a0New York Times<\/em> earlier on Friday.<\/p>\n

Sondheim was beyond well-known in the musical community around New York and elsewhere, and long considered one of the most important people in the musical theater world. Of course, he wrote the music and lyrics for several beloved shows, including\u00a0Into The Woods<\/em> and\u00a0Sweeney Todd<\/em>. He also penned the lyrics for other musicals like\u00a0Gypsy<\/em> and\u00a0West Side Story<\/em>, the latter of which\u00a0Steven Spielberg<\/strong> has adapted into a new film that is due out in December.<\/p>\n

In his life and incredible career, Sondheim earned eight\u00a0Tony Awards<\/strong>, including a\u00a0Lifetime Achievement Award<\/strong> back in 2008. He also received eight\u00a0Grammy Awards<\/strong>, and an\u00a0Oscar<\/strong> for Best Original Song. He infamously said that it was \u201cawfully nice to win one\u201d after accepting one of his first Tonys during the 1971 awards show.<\/p>\n

Broadway stars and other talented celebs have taken to social media to reflect on Sondheim\u2019s legacy and comment on his passing throughout the day on Friday. The actress\u00a0Ariana DeBose<\/strong>, who will star as Anita in Spielberg\u2019s upcoming adaptation of\u00a0West Side Story<\/em> for the silver screen, wrote on the social network (below):<\/p>\n

\u201cI am at a loss. Feels like the end of an era. He did indeed set the standard for the American musical. Rest well, sir.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Fellow Tony Award winner\u00a0Lea Salonga<\/strong> further shared grief reflecting Sondheim\u2019s passing, writing:<\/p>\n

\u201cRest In Peace, Stephen Sondheim, and thank you for your vast contributions to musical theater. We shall be singing your songs forever. Oh, my heart hurts\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

No kidding.<\/p>\n

Actor\u00a0Josh Gad<\/strong> added his own thoughts about the tragic passing, writing:<\/p>\n

\u201cPerhaps not since April 23rd of 1616 has theater lost such a revolutionary voice. Thank you Mr. Sondheim for your Demon Barber, some Night Music, a Sunday in the Park, Company, fun at a Forum, a trip<\/a> Into the Woods and telling us a West Side Story. RIP.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

So well said. And so sad.<\/p>\n
