{"id":373382,"date":"2021-11-28T05:45:49","date_gmt":"2021-11-28T02:45:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/omicron-variant-symptoms-unusual-but-mild-says-south-african-doctor\/"},"modified":"2021-11-28T05:45:49","modified_gmt":"2021-11-28T02:45:49","slug":"omicron-variant-symptoms-unusual-but-mild-says-south-african-doctor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/omicron-variant-symptoms-unusual-but-mild-says-south-african-doctor\/","title":{"rendered":"#Omicron variant symptoms &#8216;unusual but mild&#8217;, says South African doctor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Omicron variant symptoms &#8216;unusual but mild&#8217;, says South African doctor<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>The South African doctor who first sounded the alarm on the Omicron variant of the coronavirus said that its symptoms are \u201cunusual but mild\u201d in healthy patients \u2014 but she\u2019s worried the strain could cause complications in the elderly and unvaccinated.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Angelique Coetzee, a practicing doctor for 30 years who chairs the South African Medical Association (SAMA), said she believed she had found a new strain of the virus after COVID-19 patients at her private practice in Pretoria exhibited strange symptoms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTheir symptoms were so different and so mild from those I had treated before,\u201d Coetzee told <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/global-health\/science-and-disease\/south-african-doctor-raised-alarm-omicron-variant-says-symptoms\/\">The Telegraph<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>She called South Africa\u2019s vaccine advisory committee on Nov. 18 after a family of four all tested positive for the virus with symptoms that included extreme fatigue.<\/p>\n<p>So far, she\u2019s had two dozen patients who tested positive and showed symptoms of the new variant, mostly young men. About half of the patients were unvaccinated, she said. They might have a slight cough. There are no prominent symptoms. Of those infected some are currently being treated at home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She described one \u201cvery interesting case\u201d involving a 6-year-old girl.<\/p>\n<p>She had \u201ca temperature and a very high pulse rate, and I wondered if I should admit her. But when I followed up two days later, she was so much better,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Coetzee emphasized that all of her patients had been healthy, and expressed worry that elderly or unvaccinated patients, could be hit by the omicron much harder. \u2013especially those with comorbidities such as diabetes or heart disease. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we have to worry about now is that when older, unvaccinated people are infected with the new variant, and if they are not vaccinated, we are going to see many people with a severe [form of the] disease,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The World Health Organization officially named the virus on Friday, skipping two letters of the Greek alphabet and choosing \u201cOmicron.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There have been no confirmed cases of the new variant in the United States yet, but officials believe it may already be here. Two cases have been confirmed in the United Kingdom, which joined the US and European Union in issuing <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a> restrictions.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, New York Gov.
