After a few days, the offspring evolve to look and move just like their parents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The progeny can then repeat the process over and over again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPeople have thought for quite a long time that we\u2019ve worked out all the ways that life can reproduce or replicate,\u201d said study co-author Douglas Blackiston, the senior scientist at Tufts University, in a statement. \u201cBut this is something that\u2019s never been observed before.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure><iframe loading=\"lazy\" srcdoc=\"&lt;style&gt;*{padding:0;margin:0;overflow:hidden}html,body{background:#000;height:100%}img{position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;object-fit:cover;transition:opacity .1s cubic-bezier(0.4,0,1,1)}a:hover img+img{opacity:1!important}&lt;\/style&gt;&lt;a href=\" https:=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/img.youtube.com\/vi\/zuo2DP72vKQ\/hqdefault.jpg\" style=\"top: 50%;left:50%;width:68px;height:48px;transform:translate3d(-50%,-50%,0)\" height=\"240\" width=\"320\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p><!--resp-video-container--><\/p>\n<p>The millimeter-wide Xenobots are assembled from living cells scraped from frog embryos.<\/p>\n<p>Confined to Petri dishes, their lives are very different from those of their amphibious ancestors.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey would be sitting on the outside of a tadpole,\u00a0 keeping out pathogens and redistributing mucus,\u201d said Michael Levin, a biologist at Tufts University and co-leader of the new research.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cBut we\u2019re putting them into a novel context. We\u2019re\u00a0 giving them a chance to reimagine their multicellularity.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Independently, a Xenobot can produce children, but the system normally dies soon after. One of its eye-catching creations resembled Pac-Man.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s very non-intuitive,\u201d said Sam Kriegman, the lead author of the new study.\u201d It looks very simple, but it\u2019s not something a human engineer would come up with. They believe their system could advance numerous technologies, from living<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> machines that clean up microplastics to new medications.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Levin, the study\u2019s co-author, is particularly excited about the potential in regenerative medicine:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0If we knew how to tell collections of cells to do what we wanted them to do, ultimately, that\u2019s regenerative medicine \u2014 that\u2019s the solution to traumatic injury, birth defects, cancer, and aging. A<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ll of these different problems are here because we don\u2019t know how to predict and control what groups of cells are going to build.
