\n Human rights abuses have taken place at the NBA\u2019s training academies in China, a bombshell report alleges.<\/p>\n

ESPN reported on Wednesday that the young participants in the NBA program were physically beaten by Chinese instructors and were not provided proper schooling, despite commissioner Adam Silver\u2019s previous commitment that education would be \u201ccentral\u201d to the program.<\/p>\n

\u201cA former league employee compared the atmosphere when he worked in Xinjiang to \u2018World War II Germany,’\u201d ESPN reported.<\/p>\n

ESPN\u2019s report detailed how the NBA training academies, which were launched in 2016, app<\/a>eared to be largely under the control of the Chinese government with one coach who worked for the program calling it \u201ca sweat camp for athletes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were basically working for the Chinese government,\u201d one former coach told ESPN.<\/p>\n

Multiple NBA employees filed complaints to the league about how they witnessed Chinese coaches \u201cstrike teenage players\u201d and the lack of education the young participants were receiving.<\/p>\n

One former coach told ESPN he watched a Chinese coach \u201cfire a ball into a young player\u2019s face at point-blank range and then \u2018kick him in the gut.’\u201d<\/p>\n

According to ESPN, NBA officials asked current and former employees not to speak to the sports network about the expos\u00e9 with one email from a public relations official reading, \u201cPlease don\u2019t mention that you have been advised by the NBA not to respond.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mark Tatum, the NBA deputy commissioner and chief operating officer, told ESPN that the league is \u201creevaluating\u201d and \u201cconsidering other opportunities\u201d for the program.<\/p>\n

Over the past year, the NBA\u2019s intense relationship with China has been scrutinized after the league\u2019s players and coaches have largely refrained from criticizing the country\u2019s human rights violations and expressing support for Hong Kong.<\/p>\n

Earlier this month, criticism of the NBA\u2019s ties to China was renewed after it was discovered that customers were prohibited from ordering custom gear that read \u201cFree Hong Kong\u201d on its online store.<\/p>\n

The store\u2019s operator, Fanatics suggested the phrase was \u201cinadvertently prohibited\u201d and the ban was lifted. Days later though, the NBA pulled all custom gear from its online store.<\/p>\n

ESPN\u2019s prominent NBA reporter Adrian Wojnarowski also raised eyebrows when he sent Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., a profane response to the lawmaker\u2019s criticism of the league\u2019s decision of \u201cpre-approved, social<\/a> justice slogans\u201d while \u201ccensoring support\u201d for law enforcement and criticism of the Chinese Communist Party.<\/p>\n

Wojnarowski issued an apology and was temporarily suspended by the network.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
