But this is something that\u2019s never been observed before,\u201d said Douglas Blackiston, who worked on the\u00a0study. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"778\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/11\/living-robots-reproduce-02-1.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024\" alt=\"xenobots\" class=\"wp-image-20313387\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/11\/living-robots-reproduce-02-1.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1536 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/11\/living-robots-reproduce-02-1.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/11\/living-robots-reproduce-02-1.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>The organisms can swim out into their dish, find other single cells and assemble \u201cbaby\u201d xenobots.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Douglas Blackiston and Sam Kriegman<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThis is profound,\u201d added Michael Levin, co-leader of the research. \u201cThese cells have the genome of a frog, but, freed from becoming tadpoles, they use their collective intelligence, a plasticity, to do something astounding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The team said the new research could be beneficial for advancements in regenerative medicine. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we knew how to tell collections of cells to do what we wanted them to do, ultimately, that\u2019s regenerative medicine \u2014 that\u2019s the solution to traumatic injury, birth defects, cancer, and aging,\u201d\u00a0Levin said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of these different problems are here because we don\u2019t know how to predict and control what groups of cells are going to build.
