\n Former President Barack Obama delive\u200bred<\/span>\u00a0the eulogy at Rep. John Lewis\u2019 funeral Thursday afternoon, the nation\u2019s first African American president saying he owed a \u201cgreat debt\u201d to the civil rights icon.<\/p>\n

The 44th president followed speeches from former Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve come here today because I like so many Americans owe a great debt to John Lewis, and his forceful vision of freedom,\u201d the former commander-in-chief said at the beginning of his eulogy.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow this country is a constant work in progress. We\u2019re born with instructions to form a more perfect union, and explicit in those words is the idea that we\u2019re imperfect,\u201d he continued, \u201cWhat gives each new generation purpose is to take up the unfinished work of the last and carry it further than any might have thought possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lewis, Obama said, was \u201ca mentor to young people, including me at the time \u2014 until his final day on this earth, he not only embraced that responsibility, but he made it his life\u2019s work.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Georgia Congressman died earlier this month from stage 4 pancreatic cancer at the age of 80. He had been diagnosed in December of last year.<\/p>\n

First elected in 1986 and lauded as \u201cthe conscience<\/a> of Congress,\u201d Lewis, a staunch Democrat, commanded respect from both sides of the aisle.<\/p>\n

He forged his reputation in the 1960s, most notably during the 1965 civil rights march in Selma, Alabama, during which he suffered a skull fracture at the end of a police billy club.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is still work yet to be done,\u201d he urged during a 50th-anniversary event at the Edmund Pettus Bridge in 2015. The bridge is where the march, now referred to as \u201cBloody Sunday,\u201d took place.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
