It has noted previously that there\u2019s only one other big provider of GIFs, Google\u2019s Tenor.<\/p>\n<p>The regulator also was concerned that the deal removed potential competition from the UK\u2019s $9.3 billion display advertising market, of which Facebook controls half.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the first time the watchdog has sought to unwind a tech deal, marking an escalation by regulators seeking to tame digital giants.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook, which has been renamed Meta, said it disagreed with the decision and is considering all its options, including an <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>eal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoth consumers and Giphy are better off with the support of our infrastructure, talent, and resources,\u201d the company said. \u201cTogether, Meta and Giphy would enhance Giphy\u2019s product for the millions of people, businesses, developers and API partners in the UK and around the world who use Giphy every day, providing more choices for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/11\/facebook-giphy_44.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024\" alt=\"A Giphy logo displayed on a smartphone with a Facebook logo in the background.\" class=\"wp-image-20317670\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/11\/facebook-giphy_44.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1536 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/11\/facebook-giphy_44.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/11\/facebook-giphy_44.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>The UK already sued Facebook for failing to cooperate fully with its investigation.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">SOPA Images\/LightRocket via Gett<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After consulting with other businesses and groups and assessing alternative solutions proposed by Facebook, the watchdog said it \u201cconcluded that its competition concerns can only be addressed by Facebook selling Giphy in its entirety to an approved buyer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stuart McIntosh, chair of the watchdog\u2019s independent group that carried out the investigation, said the deal \u201chas already removed a potential challenger in the display advertising market.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout action, it will also allow Facebook to increase its significant market power in social media even further, through controlling competitors\u2019 access to Giphy GIFs,\u201d he said. \u201cBy requiring Facebook to sell Giphy, we are protecting millions of social media users and promoting competition and innovation in digital advertising.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>New York-based Giphy\u2019s library of short looping videos, or GIFs, are a popular tool for internet users sending messages or posting on social media.<\/p>\n<p>The two sides have waged a bitter battle over the deal, reportedly worth $400 million.<\/p>\n<p>The Competition and Markets Authority said in a provisional decision in August that Facebook should be forced to sell Giphy. The social giant responded with a strongly worded letter, saying the provisional decision contained \u201cfundamental errors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last month, the watchdog fined Facebook $67.4 million for failing to provide information needed for the investigation, saying the company\u2019s failure to comply was deliberate.<\/p>\n<p>The watchdog has said that prior to the deal, Giphy had been considering expanding its advertising services to other countries, including the UK. That would have added a new player to the market and encouraged more innovation from social media sites and advertisers, but Facebook terminated Giphy\u2019s ad partnerships after announcing the deal, it said.\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
