\n In the wake of Regina King\u2019s feature directorial debut \u201cOne Night in Miami\u201d making this year\u2019s Toronto International Film Festival premiere list, Amazon Studios has scooped up the movie\u2019s global rights for a release later this year in time for awards season.<\/p>\n

The \u201cIf Beale Street Could Talk\u201d Oscar-winning actress\u2019 movie based on Olivier-nominated Kemp Powers 2013 stage play, which he adapted, follows a young Cassius Clay as he emerges from the Miami Beach Convention Center to become the new World Heavyweight Boxing Champion on the night of Feb. 25, 1964. The man who would become Muhammad Ali has just shockingly defeated\u00a0Sonny Liston. While crowds of people swarm Miami Beach to celebrate the match, Clay \u2013 unable to stay on the island because of Jim Crow-era segregation laws \u2013 instead spends the night at the Hampton House Motel in one of Miami\u2019s historically black neighborhoods celebrating with three of his closest friends: activist Malcolm X, singer Sam Cooke and football star Jim Brown. The next morning, the four men emerge determined to define a new world for themselves and their people.<\/p>\n

Eli Goree plays Clay, Kingsley Ben-Adir plays Malcolm X, Aldis Hodge plays Brown and Leslie Odom Jr. plays Cooke.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2019One Night in Miami\u2019 beautifully captures a significant moment in history when these great minds gathered and ultimately helped shape the conversation of what we know today as the civil rights movement,\u201d said Head of Amazon Studios\u2019 Jennifer Salke. \u201cRegina King is a force of nature \u2013 mastering her craft in front of the camera as we\u2019ve seen in her extensive body of work, and now taking her talent behind the camera. We\u2019re so proud to welcome Regina and Kemp to the Amazon family.\u201d<\/p>\n

King said, \u201cAmazon\u2019s enthusiasm for \u2018One Night in Miami\u2019 is both humbling and exciting. I am honored to have them as partners on my feature film directorial debut.\u201d<\/p>\n

Producers are Jess Wu Calder and Keith Calder of Snoot Entertainment (\u201cBlindspotting,\u201d \u201cAnomalisa\u201d) and Jody Klein of ABKCO (\u201cThe Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus\u201d), King and Powers are executive producers.<\/p>\n

ABKCO will release the official \u201cOne Night in Miami\u201d original soundtrack album in conjunction with the film.<\/p>\n

King, a 3x Emmy winner, was recently nominated for her fifth Primetime Emmy for her turn in HBO\u2019s limited series<\/a>\u00a0\u201cWatchmen\u201d in the Lead Actress category for her turn as vigilante Sister Night.<\/p>\n

ICM Partners reps King and negotiated the deal on behalf of the filmmakers. King is also represented by attorney Nina Shaw and managed by John Carrabino.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
