It\u2019s hard to fix the problem completely, but there are some things you can do to reduce Chrome\u2019s memory usage.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_Does_Chrome_Use_So_Much_RAM\"><\/span>Why Does Chrome Use So Much RAM?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>You may not believe it, but Google Chrome actually has gotten less RAM hungry over the years. Still, it\u2019s something people notice, and it can be a problem. What is it about Chrome that makes it use so much memory, anyway?<\/p>\n<p>Chrome and other web browsers store every tab and extension in a separate RAM process. Isolating the processes like this way offers better stability, improved security, and better performance with modern multi-core CPUs. These processes are small, but they add up quickly.<\/p>\n<p>In short, Chrome splits everything out into its own process and you\u2019re most likely doing a lot of things at the same time. A lot of processes mean a lot of RAM is being used. So how can we improve this?<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <strong><em>What Is RAM? Everything You Need to Know<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Stop_Background_Apps\"><\/span>Stop Background Apps<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Chrome <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>s can run in the background after you close the browser. They\u2019ll sit there and eat up memory while you don\u2019t even realize they\u2019re open. You can use the Task Manager to close them manually, but an even better solution is to prevent it from happening at all.<\/p>\n<p>To do that, open the Chrome Settings and go to Advanced &gt; System. Some of them do, but it\u2019s not the default behavior for all Chrome apps.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Dont_Keep_So_Many_Tabs_Open\"><\/span>Don\u2019t Keep So Many Tabs Open<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>This may seem obvious, but one of the simplest things you can do to ease up on RAM usage is to clean up your browser habits. If you constantly have over a dozen tabs open, Chrome is always going to be using a lot of memory.<\/p>\n<p>Chrome does try to manage tabs so they don\u2019t eat up RAM so much. Tabs that haven\u2019t been opened in a while will go to sleep. Just like tabs, extensions have their own processes, too. If you have some extensions that aren\u2019t being used, removing them can free up some RAM.<\/p>\n<p>Click the three-dot menu icon in the top right corner and find \u201cExtensions\u201d under \u201cMore Tools.\u201d You can also enter <code>chrome:\/\/extensions\/<\/code> in the address bar. You can use this to get a very detailed look at exactly what\u2019s running in Chrome. In <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>, you probably don\u2019t need to kill Chrome processes.\u00a0If there are some processes eating up RAM, you can kill them here.<\/p>\n<p>The Task Manager can be found in the three-dot menu icon in the right corner under \u201cMore Tools.\u201d It can also be opened with the keyboard shortcut Shift+Esc.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/2019-08-20_12h15_31.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Chrome Task Manager.\" width=\"620\" height=\"367\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Simply select a task that you don\u2019t want to be running and click the \u201cEnd Process\u201d button. In general, you shouldn\u2019t need to kill these processes. It\u2019s easier to simply close tabs. There are two ways you can do this\u2014reset the settings or do a fresh install.<\/p>\n<p>Resetting the settings will take things back to the way they were when you first installed Chrome. It will reset the start page, new tab page, search engine, and pinned tabs. In addition, it will disable extensions (until you enable them) and clear temporary data. Your bookmarks, history, and password will not be cleared.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-770098\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/2021-11-19_16-43-38.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Reset Chrome Settings.\" width=\"641\" height=\"270\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Open the Chrome Settings and go to Advanced &gt; Reset &amp; Clean Up. Select \u201cRestore settings to their original defaults\u201d and then click \u201cReset Settings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the second method, you\u2019ll want to uninstall and reinstall Chrome. This will reset everything as well, but it will also remove all of your saved data. If you use Chrome Sync, you\u2019ll be able to get it back. There\u2019s only so much you can do to improve the situation, but it can be managed. In general, Chrome\u2019s memory usage isn\u2019t a super big deal unless your device is low-powered or has problems.
