“#Twitter<\/a> execs refused Israel\u2019s request to remove Iran\u2019s Ayatollah Khamenei tweets<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n Twitter executives last month rebuffed a request from the Israeli government to remove tweets from Iran\u2019s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei calling for the genocide of the Israeli people \u2014 claiming in a stunning letter obtained by The Post that the Jew-hate qualified as \u201ccomments on current affairs.\u201d<\/p>\n

The decision comes after the social media giant recently began policing President Trump\u2019s tweets, alleging they \u201cglorify violence\u201d and spread misinformation about mail-in voting.<\/p>\n

In a May 20 letter to Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, Israel\u2019s Minister for Strategic Affairs Orit Farkash-Hacohen called for the company to uphold its own hate speech policy and remove antisemitic tweets from Khamenei calling Israel a \u201ccancerous growth\u201d to be \u201cuprooted and destroyed.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTwitter\u2019s own Hateful Conduct Policy clearly stipulates that a user \u201cmay not promote violence against, or directly attack, or threaten other people on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin or religious affiliation\u2026 or calls for mass murder,\u201d Farkash-Hacohen wrote to Dorsey.<\/p>\n

\u201cHowever, the Supreme Leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, is unremittingly abusing your platform by doing just that \u2014 without any enforcement or repercussions,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor far too long he has been allowed to spread calls for physical violence and antisemitism on Twitter,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

But in a tone-deaf response, Twitter\u2019s Vice President of Public Policy Sin\u00e9ad McSweeney said the hateful screed did not violate their policies.<\/p>\n

\u201cWorld leaders use Twitter to engage in discourse with each other, as well as their constituents,\u201d McSweeney wrote in the June 15 letter obtained by the Post.<\/p>\n

\u201cPresently, our policies with regards to world leaders state that direct interactions with fellow public figures, comments on current affairs, or strident statements of foreign policy on economic or military issues are general<\/a>ly not in violation of the Twitter Rules,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur assessment is that tweets you have cited are not in violation of our policies at this time, and they fall into the category of foreign policy saber-rattling on economic or military issues of our app<\/a>roach to world leaders,\u201d McSweeney wrote.<\/p>\n

Twitter\u2019s refusal to remove the Iranian dictator\u2019s tweets have led to accusations of \u201cdouble standards\u201d from Israeli lawmakers after the social media giant recently began restricting President Trump\u2019s tweets, claiming they were misinformation or promoted violence.<\/p>\n

In May, Twitter slapped a \u201cpublic interest notice\u201d on the president\u2019s tweet during unrest in Minneapolis over George Floyd\u2019s death in which he warned: \u201cWhen the looting starts, the shooting starts.\u201d<\/p>\n

Twitter masked the tweet, saying its commentary on riots after Floyd\u2019s death at the hands of police broke a rule against \u201cglorifying violence.\u201d<\/p>\n

Several days earlier, the social media giant took the unprecedented step of labeling two tweets from Trump as \u201cpromoting misinformation\u201d after he claimed that mail-in ballots are fraudulent.<\/p>\n

The repeated policing of Trump\u2019s tweets \u2014 and, recently, the suspension of his son Donald Trump Jr.\u2019s account \u2014 but not hateful missives from other leaders, including Khamenei, has led to accusations of censorship and political bias.<\/p>\n

In a story Thursday, the Post detailed how a Twitter spokeswoman tried to justify the censoring of Trump, but not the leader of a basket-case Middle Eastern regime, during a hearing in front of the Knesset, Israel\u2019s parliament in Jerusalem.<\/p>\n

The Twitter rep claimed that tweets from the Iranian leader \u2014 where he has publicly likened Israel to the COVID-19 pandemic and a virus to be stopped \u2014 amounted to little more than \u201cforeign policy saber-rattling.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCalling for genocide on Twitter is OK, but commenting on political situations in certain countries is not OK?\u201d one stunned lawmaker asked.<\/p>\n

The Post last month revealed how Twitter\u2019s site integrity chief had a history of making incendiary anti-Trump comments on the platform, including claiming that there were \u201cactual Nazis in the White House.\u201d<\/p>\n

Khamenei has also pushed holocaust-denial on the website, but during the hearing at the Knesset on Wednesday, Twitter insisted they couldn\u2019t do anything about it unless it was \u201ctargeted harassment.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
