{"id":376635,"date":"2021-12-05T05:27:20","date_gmt":"2021-12-05T02:27:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/ny-sweepstakes-prize-nothing-but-a-cruel-grift-and-scam\/"},"modified":"2021-12-05T05:27:20","modified_gmt":"2021-12-05T02:27:20","slug":"ny-sweepstakes-prize-nothing-but-a-cruel-grift-and-scam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/ny-sweepstakes-prize-nothing-but-a-cruel-grift-and-scam\/","title":{"rendered":"#NY sweepstakes &#8216;prize&#8217; nothing but a cruel grift and scam"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#NY sweepstakes &#8216;prize&#8217; nothing but a cruel grift and scam<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>The check is in the scam! <\/p>\n<p>New Yorkers are receiving letters trumpeting that they are winners of the \u201cSupermarket Customer Sweepstakes Raffle Draw\u201d \u2014 and their prize is a cool $880,000.<\/p>\n<p>The congratulatory missive includes a realistic-looking first payment check of $8,000 and requests a processing fee of $7,000 to release the remaining \u201cpayout.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>But the golden ticket is nothing more than a tease and suckers who buy into the swindle also get stuck paying bank fees after the award check doesn\u2019t clear. <\/p>\n<p>The letter assures that a \u201cbank certified cashier\u2019s check for the [prize] is already purchased in your name and awaiting authorization for release.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t take the bait.<\/p>\n<p>One big giveaway is that the dollar amounts don\u2019t add up. Better off playing the lottery.<\/p>\n<p>The state attorney <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>\u2019s office has received 172 complaints about sweepstakes scams since 2019 and 46 in 2021, said Fabien Levy, an AG spokesman.<\/p>\n<p>In the first nine months of 2021, the Federal Trade Commission received 3,856 complaints from New York consumers about \u201cprize\/sweepstakes\/lottery scams,\u201d said Jay Mayfield, an FTC spokesman. That\u2019s a 30 percent spike from the 2,970 complaints lodged about these scams during the same time period in 2020, Mayfield said.<\/p>\n<p>Nationally, in the first nine months of 2021, the FTC received 109,550 complaints from consumers about these scams compared to 86,897 complaints in the same time period in 2020 \u2014 a 26 percent increase. <\/p>\n<p>A tell-tale sign that a sweepstakes contest is a scam is when \u201cyou have to pay to get your prize,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.consumer.ftc.gov\/articles\/fake-prize-sweepstakes-and-lottery-scams\">according to consumer tips put out by the FTC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>An 83-year-old Staten Island man alerted The Post to the fugazy \u201cFinal Payout Notice\u201d when the letter came addressed to his late wife.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI realized it was a scam in a New York minute,\u201d the eagle-eyed resident said.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/Cash-e1638668757597.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024\" alt=\"A pile of hundred dollar bills.\" class=\"wp-image-20376532\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/Cash-e1638668757597.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/Cash-e1638668757597.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/Cash-e1638668757597.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>The Federal Trade Commission has received almost 1,000 more scam complaints from New Yorkers.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Christopher Sadowski<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A parade of individuals <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scampulse.com\/supermarket-customer-sweepstakes-raffle-draw-reviews\">railed about the raffle<\/a> on the website scampulse.com. The sweepstakes company address is P.O. box in Ontario. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease do not fall for this scam. This was sent to my 85-year-old mother who thankfully runs these things by me.
