Mmm, I bet that would convince even the most stubborn Earth-killer lovers to flock to EVs\u2019 superior embrace.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Unfortunately, this is still just a dream. Of course there are loads of\u00a0<\/span>infrastructural and economic hurdles<span>\u00a0in the way, but there\u2019s an even more fundamental issue that\u2019s stopping us from super-fast charging our mainstream lithium-ion batteries:\u00a0<\/span><i data-stringify-type=\"italic\">chemistry<\/i><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/fast.wistia.net\/embed\/iframe\/ls0o33cgd0?videoFoam=true&amp;autoPlay=true\" title=\"\" allowtransparency=\"true\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" class=\"wistia_embed\" name=\"wistia_embed\" allowfullscreen=\"\" msallowfullscreen=\"\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s been already tested that fast charging your EV speeds up battery degradation. But that\u2019s where we hit the snag that\u2019s taming our wildest charging fantasies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>When a battery is charged fast, the intercalation process can get a bit rocky \u2014 which, as we now know, isn\u2019t great for the battery. So let\u2019s take a look at what exactly is h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ening.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_The_graphite_particles_become_distorted\"><\/span><strong>1. The graphite particles become distorted\u00a0<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The scientific team discovered that repeated fast charging made the<span>\u00a0graphite atoms at the particle edges distorted, hindering the intercalation process.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Lithium_ions_cant_enter_the_graphite_particles\"><\/span><strong>2. Lithium ions can\u2019t enter the graphite particles<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>As a result, lithium ions can find their \u201cway home\u201d inside the graphite,\u00a0so they tend to aggregate on top of the anode\u2019s surface, creating a \u201cplating\u201d effect \u2014 simply put, they form a thick deposit on the anode\u2019s top.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_The_anode_expands\"><\/span><strong>3. The anode expands<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The lithium ions\u2019 plating makes the anode undergo some degree of irreversible expansion, which in turn impairs battery performance.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Conclusions\"><\/span>Conclusions<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span>Daniel Abraham, battery scientist and co-author of the study explains: <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span>The faster we charge our battery, the more atomically disordered the anode will become, which will ultimately prevent the lithium ions from being able to move back and forth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u200bThe key is to find ways to either prevent this loss of organization or to somehow modify the graphite particles so that the lithium ions can intercalate more efficiently.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"So%E2%80%A6_whats_the_takeaway\"><\/span>So\u2026 what\u2019s the takeaway?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Super-fast charging with graphite-based lithium EV batteries doesn\u2019t seem very likely at the moment. I\u2019m sorry.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"c-mrkdwn__br\" data-stringify-type=\"paragraph-break\"\/>So for super-fast charging to become a reality, we need to hope for a breakthrough in graphite <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a>. That would be optimal as most EVs today run on graphite-based lithium.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"c-mrkdwn__br\" data-stringify-type=\"paragraph-break\"\/><span>However, the good <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> is that we aren\u2019t bound to them, as we\u2019re eyeing the possibilities of alternatives such as\u00a0<\/span>silicon<span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"c-link\" tabindex=\"-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.store-dot.com\/ev\" data-stringify-link=\"https:\/\/www.store-dot.com\/ev\" data-sk=\"tooltip_parent\" data-remove-tab-index=\"true\">semiconductor nanoparticles<\/a><span>\u00a0maybe becoming commercial.
