{"id":377221,"date":"2021-12-06T20:59:50","date_gmt":"2021-12-06T17:59:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/dow-jumps-650-points-as-stocks-swing-amid-omicron-threat\/"},"modified":"2021-12-06T20:59:50","modified_gmt":"2021-12-06T17:59:50","slug":"dow-jumps-650-points-as-stocks-swing-amid-omicron-threat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/dow-jumps-650-points-as-stocks-swing-amid-omicron-threat\/","title":{"rendered":"#Dow jumps 650 points as stocks swing amid Omicron threat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Dow jumps 650 points as stocks swing amid Omicron threat<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped more than 700 points on Monday as stocks continued to swing wildly by the day amid the uncertain threat of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus. <\/p>\n<p>The Dow was last seen surging 734 points, or more than 2.1 percent higher, at 35,315 as investors shrugged off the new variant and ditched expensive tech stocks for those in <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a>, entertainment and other sectors linked to the global economic recovery.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, the S&amp;P 500 was up 1.5 percent while the tech-heavy Nasdaq was up 1.1 percent. <\/p>\n<p>Some of the day\u2019s biggest winners were travel stocks that were hit particularly hard last week by the discovery of the Omicron variant and fears that it could spark a fresh wave of restrictions around the world.<\/p>\n<p>Carnival Corp and Royal Caribbean both surged almost 10 percent by noon while Norwegian Cruise Line was up more than 11 percent. <\/p>\n<p>Delta Air Lines was up more than 8 percent as American Airlines surged almost 10 percent.<\/p>\n<p>High-growth tech stocks had a tougher day with investors, perhaps preparing for a speedier-than-expected tapering of the central bank\u2019s bond-buying program, continued to sell off. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"712\" height=\"507\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/dow-jones-01.png?w=712\" alt=\"Dow Jones.\" class=\"wp-image-20388705\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/dow-jones-01.png 712w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/dow-jones-01.png?w=356 356w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 712px) 100vw, 712px\"\/><figcaption>The Dow was last seen trading more than 1.9 percent higher as investors shrugged off the new variant.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Shares of Tesla, for example, were down more than 3 percent by midday after\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/commodities\/exclusive-sec-probes-tesla-over-whistleblower-claims-solar-panel-defects-2021-12-06\/\">Reuters<\/a>\u00a0reported the Securities and Exchange Commission has opened an investigation into the company in response to a whistleblower complaint from a former Tesla employee about fire risks associated with its solar panel systems.<\/p>\n<p>Other high-growth picks were also down, including Nvidia and Moderna. And stay-at-home picks like Peloton and Zoom also fell after getting a boost last week amid the fears around Omicron. <\/p>\n<p>Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell spooked tech investors last week when he warned that the\u00a0central bank will still discuss hastening the tapering of the bond-buying program at its December meeting, despite new threats posed by the Omicron variant.<\/p>\n<p>The program\u2019s currently being wound down at a $15 billion-a-month pace. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/dow-jones-generic-02.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024\" alt=\"Stock traders.\" class=\"wp-image-20388808\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/dow-jones-generic-02.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/dow-jones-generic-02.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/12\/dow-jones-generic-02.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Travel stocks were hit particularly hard last week by the discovery of the Omicron variant.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Spencer Platt\/Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cAt this point, the economy is very strong and inflationary pressures are higher, and it is therefore <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ropriate in my view to consider wrapping up the taper of our asset purchases \u2026 perhaps a few months sooner,\u201d Powell said. \u201cI expect that we will discuss that at our upcoming meeting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Powell\u2019s remarks \u2014 along with the trickle of information about whether the new COVID-19 variant is resistant to vaccines, more infectious or more deadly \u2014 helped ensure the Dow finished last week in the red in what was a historically volatile week.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan Detrick, chief market strategist for LPL Financial, said he\u2019s bullish on the market headed into the end of the year, but warned the volatility of last week is likely here to stay. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough we do expect this volatility to continue, it very well could be a buying opportunity. We\u2019ve been living with COVID-19 for more than 20 months now. Buckle up though, as big swings on daily <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> could be here for several more weeks.
