That\u2019s why negotiating a salary is tricky, not just for fresh job-hunters, but even for those with years of work experience. Finding the perfect middle ground between feeling short-changed and being unrealistic is crucial in obtaining the job offer you deserve.<\/p>\n<p>We spoke with a group of experts comprised of Talent Acquisition Specialists, Hiring Managers, and CEOs to get advice on the best salary negotiation techniques and the most important things to consider.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_Know_your_worth_in_the_market\"><\/span>1. Know your worth in the market<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Knowledge is power, so make sure that you do your research upfront. Start by determining the average salary range for the position that you\u2019re pursuing in your geographic area. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.glassdoor.co.uk\/Salaries\/index.htm\">Glassdoor<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.payscale.com\/research\/UK\/Country=United_Kingdom\/Salary\">PayScale<\/a>, or <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.indeed.com\/career\/salaries\">Indeed<\/a> offer great resources to help you do this.<\/p>\n<p>Based on whether you have more or less experience than the average person with that job, this should provide a helpful starting point for your salary negotiation. If you feel comfortable, you could also elicit the help of friends or colleagues in the industry.<\/p>\n<p>Definitely do not ask for a salary without having a strong basis for this request. Chris Wilkinson (Head of Talent, Forward Partners) emphasises that you need to, \u201cdo your research upfront, know your worth in the market, and have all of this in your head before talking numbers with a company,\u201d while Sorabh Dhir (Founder and CEO, docuvo) puts it quite simply as: \u201cDon\u2019t go in blind.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Understand_your_limits\"><\/span>2. Understand your limits<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Chances are that higher packages correspond with more responsibilities and higher expectations. Don\u2019t get distracted by the dollar signs and take on something that\u2019s beyond your capabilities. As Chris says, \u201cknow where your red lines are in relation to your commitments.\u201d Similarly, Sorabh stresses that, \u201csame as any negotiation, know your limits.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Chances are you will be left pretty exposed in a startup if you are overpaid and underperforming, so be realistic and negotiate accordingly \u2013 Chris Wilkinson<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Always_go_second\"><\/span>3. Always go second<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>When a potential employer asks what salary you expect, don\u2019t feel pressured to answer first. Change the direction of the conversation instead. \u201cMention that you want to know more about what the position will entail,\u201d advises Nick Larkins (Head of Talent, Hire Space), \u201cand ask the employer for a figure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re a woman, going second is even more important. In her experience, Hanna Sanford (Talent Acquisition, OneFineStay) found that, \u201cfemale candidates are more likely to undersell themselves \u2013 so let the employer provide the first number.\u201d Statistics show that <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/3049676\/a-womans-most-powerful-salary-negotiation-tool-silence\">female candidates undersell themselves by 15-20%<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Check_your_priorities\"><\/span>4. Check your priorities<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Again, don\u2019t let the dollar signs distract you during your job hunt. Examine the role you\u2019ve been offered in detail: Will you be learning new things and challenging yourself? Will you have access to a great mentor? Is there plenty of opportunity for growth? If the answer is no, the initially high salary might not be worth it in the end.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrioritize growth and education over money instead,\u201d says Samantha Hepburn (Partnerships Lead at <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">General<\/a> Assembly). \u201cYou might be offered 60k but if the role is something you\u2019ve already been doing, you\u2019re not going to learn anything. How will you be able to go above that in the future?\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Always take long-term reward over short-term cash \u2013 Chris Wilkinson<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_Corporate_versus_startup_salary\"><\/span>5. Corporate versus startup salary<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>From the company culture to the dress code, working at a corporate is vastly different from working at a startup. It should come as no surprise, then, that negotiating salary also requires different tactics at a startup versus a corporate. Due to their limited resources, startups are less likely offer fringe benefits such as health insurance or paid pension. Instead, you might want to negotiate having flexible working hours or being able to work from home. You might have more scope for creativity, so why not try asking for a dog-friendly office?<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Why go into a startup for corporate pay packets? It screams wrong mindset \u2013 Chris Wilkinson<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>At a corporate, see what additional benefits could be offered, such as gym memberships or health check-ups. Although a corporate salary can be higher than a startup one, beware of the \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/archive\/negotiating-salary-startup-corporate#Fq1MX5K1xaqH\">brand-name discount<\/a>\u201d \u2013 some companies use the weight of their well-known and reputable brand to get away with offering lower salaries. As with everything else, whether this is worth it will depend on your priorities.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"6_Equity_options\"><\/span>6. Equity options<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If you believe in the product of a startup, you might wish to consider equity options when joining.
