After <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cneos.jpl.nasa.gov\/pd\/cs\/pdc21\/pdc21_day2_briefing2.pdf\">simulating catastrophe impacts<\/a> and sl<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ing asteroids with spaceships, the agency on Monday unveiled its most outlandish weapon yet: an algorithm.<\/p>\n<p>Named Sentry-II, the system will evaluate the threats posed by <span>near-Earth asteroids (NEAs). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In a press release, NASA said the system can rapidly assess potential impacts for all known NEAs \u2014 with odds as low as a few chances in 10 million.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"post-image post-mediaBleed aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1375136 js-lazy\" alt=\"NASA diagram shows the orbits of 2,200 potentially hazardous objects as calculated by JPL\u2019s Center for Near Earth Object Studies (CNEOS). While it<\/span> accurately modeled how gravity shaped an asteroid\u2019s orbit, it didn\u2019t integrate non-gravitational forces \u2014 such as sunlight heating the object\u2019s dayside.<\/p>\n<p>It could also struggle to forecast<span> asteroids that come extremely close to Earth, as their motion gets erratically deflected\u00a0by our planet\u2019s gravity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Sentry-II was created to overcome these limitations.<\/p>\n<figure>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" srcdoc=\"&lt;style&gt;*{padding:0;margin:0;overflow:hidden}html,body{background:#000;height:100%}img{position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;object-fit:cover;transition:opacity .1s cubic-bezier(0.4,0,1,1)}a:hover img+img{opacity:1!important}&lt;\/style&gt;&lt;a href=\" https:=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/img.youtube.com\/vi\/Cb9IL8AqrGA\/hqdefault.jpg\" style=\"top: 50%;left:50%;width:68px;height:48px;transform:translate3d(-50%,-50%,0)\" height=\"240\" width=\"320\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p><!--resp-video-container--><\/p>\n<p>A key aspect of predicting asteroid impacts is modeling uncertainty. While the original Sentry made some assumptions about an asteroid\u2019s orbit, the new software applies a different approach.<\/p>\n<p><span>It first models thousands of random points throughout the \u201cuncertainty region\u201d of the rock\u2019s trajectory. The algorithm then evaluates all the possible orbits within this entire area.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>As a result, Sentry-II can assess low probability impact scenarios that its assumptive predecessor could have missed.<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cSentry-II is a fantastic advancement in finding tiny impact probabilities for a huge range of scenarios,\u201d said NASA\u2019s Steve Chesley, who worked on both systems. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWhen the consequences of a future asteroid impact are so big, it pays to find even the smallest impact risk hiding in the data.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Indeed, it can take eons before the full impact is revealed. Scientists only recently discovered that the dino-killing asteroid may have <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/bath.ac.uk\/announcements\/modern-snakes-evolved-from-a-few-survivors-of-dino-killing-asteroid\/\">helped snakes to thrive on Earth<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The next devastating space rock could have even deeper repercussions.
